Help us create people-collecting green spaces in San Francisco’s Central Market District!
San Francisco’s Central Market
needs your help!
The Central Market District lies at the very heart of San Francisco – and it needs your help. Over the last few decades, this neighborhood has suffered from crime, vandalism and empty storefronts, making it one of the worst neighborhoods in a city renowned for its beauty.
Despite its problems, Central Market still retains its cultural vibrancy and unique character. Business owners, residents, and city agencies are working to build on the neighborhood's strengths, and the last of couple of years have seen a surge of new shops, restaurants, tech offices, and arts organizations calling this area home, and bringing a new life to the street.
Our team believes that lasting change is around the corner and that now is the time to make an investment in the community fabric. In its current form the streetscape has all of the financial district’s formality, but lacks any indication of that emerging vibrancy or the natural landscape that the people of San Francisco love.
Learning from recent micro-park projects, we propose creating a series of refuges along the sidewalk to provide pedestrians and tourists an opportunity to rest, a place for community members to meet and interact, a lunch spot for office workers, a performance area for artists, and the beauty of green space for all.
Our modular design approach is so simple, it's square! Take a cube and hollow one side. Now arrange the cubes along the sidewalk in informal groups, some acting as seats and others as planters. The layout can adapt to the conditions on the ground, while updating the streetscape to the vibe of this emerging neighborhood. An installation can be at the scale of a bench or that of a city block. Perhaps this approach to street furniture can even grow beyond the Central Market district and be applied from the Castro to the Embarcadero!
The minimum funding level will allow us to create a pilot installation of 12 pieces, but raising funds beyond that minimum will allow us to expand the pilot installation, and even create additional installations in the Central Market area!
Who we are
For the last two years, a group of designers from HOK has been working pro-bono with the non-profit Central Market Community Benefit District on projects to enliven the Central Market streetscape, starting with the creative reuse of the existing newspaper kiosks. This latest project has developed with input and support from the San Francisco Arts Commission, the city’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Better Market Street project team, Department of Public Works, and the non-profits SF Beautiful and Livable City.
We have submitted a permit for installation and have the approval of the International Art Museum of America for the pilot installation to be located just outside their entry. re:SEAT is slated to debut on October 19th, 2012, as part of Urban Solutions' “2 Blocks of Art” program. Your contribution goes towards making that (and future installations) a success!
Where you come in
We believe re:SEAT can be a significant part of the positive transformation already underway in the Central Market area, and we can make it a reality with your help. Since this project is completely non-profit (and publicly funded) the more you contribute to it and spread the word, the greater our chances of success.
In return, we’ve come up with some really cool hand-crafted gifts – think photo frames, drink coasters and architectural sketches. We think the coolest though is a seat of your own!
