About this project

Remainder is a brand spanking new board game from a man with a passion. A passion for having fun, and a passion to have fun with others. With a background in computer games dating all the way back to 2002, this person recently delved into the unfamiliar worlds of table top games and wood working. And the result is unbelievable. The result is Remainder.
With newly found vigor and excitement for what lay ahead, a game design was born. Through a number of prototypes and extended play-testing with real individuals, Remainder has evolved into a finished product.
All that's left is for you to enjoy it.

WHAT I WANT TO DO
I want fun to be at the tips of your fingers. I want excitement to be in arm's reach. I want THIS game on YOUR tabletop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW I PLAN ON DOING IT
Well first I'm gonna sweet talk you, and after you willingly submit, I'll hand-deliver the game to your doorstep. Before the first ring of your doorbell even finishes ringing, you'll open the door in anticipation of my arrival. You'll eagerly let me in for some tea and biscuits, and we'll sit around for a few hours playing this wonderful game!
Well.. ok.. maybe that's not the best plan. I think I'm going to take a less personal route and one that's far more realistic. At it's core it's a very simple plan, but it has great potential for growth.
Assuming the funding goal is reached here on Kickstarter, I'll buy some webspace and put up an awesome website. Further assuming that some people pledge at least $100 dollars, I'll be able to take some quality photos of their game boards to show as examples. All customization options will have example images right there on the website.
Initially, I'll offer the same types of boards I'm offering here on Kickstarter. As time goes on and I get some more income coming in, I'll be able to invest in better tools and equipment, which in turn will allow me to offer a wider variety of board designs.
With each board made, my woodworking skills are bound to improve. I'll have a variety of different board designs. Perhaps some will be magnetic, electric, or portable. The possibilities are endless.
It all starts here, on Kickstarter. If you'd like to help me get this started, I would greatly appreciate it. In turn for your assistance, you get a quality board game made by a person's own hands.

WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
// The Creation Process
Each game board is hand-crafted using various cutting, drilling, and sanding tools or materials. Initially, a large piece of wood is bought and trimmed to size.
Next, the layout of the game is measured and penciled in on the newly cut wood. Holes are carefully drilled at the proper markings.
At this point, the board is ready to be sanded. This final stage of the process is the most time and effort consuming, particularly because my intention is to make a quality board every time.
For the time being, the sanding is done by hand. As I progress in this endeavor, I will invest in an electric sander as well as other electric tools, with the intention of making my job as enjoyable as possible.
Once sanding is finished, the board is complete. The instruction manual is printed and assembled. Marbles and dice are purchased from an outside vendor, and once they are received everything can be packaged together in a box and set aside for shipment.
// Further Customization
Pledging $100 or more allows you to get a stained and glossy board, giving it an extremely professional look. The staining process is fairly simple.
Stains come in a variety of colors. The chosen stain is applied to the wood in two coats. Each coat takes at least 24 hours to dry. In between stains, the wood is lightly sanded and rinsed with mineral spirits to remove any dust.
Once staining is done, two coats of polyurethane are brushed onto the wood using a paint brush. Polyurethane adds the shiny protective layer to the wood that makes it smooth to the touch. Each coat dries within 6 hours, with the wood being wet sanded in between each coat to remove dust and scratches.
A final wet sanding finishes the board. Bumpers are added to the corners on both sides of the board to protect the surfaces which it will sit on.
// Additional Costs
Additional costs include money for things like transportation, food, as well as the time investment itself.
Buying materials involves going to the store and getting what I need to create the game board. Luckily, I have a nearby Home Depot that has all the supplies I need for really great prices.
To conserve gas, I plan on making lists of needed supplies before heading out. But there's no doubt that there will be times when I'll need some more of this or some more of that and unexpected trips will be needed.
I typically don't worry about making an extra trip because the hardware store is like a playground for me. There's so many different things there that people can constantly get new ideas. Regardless of that, trips still add up, and some of your pledge money will go towards gas money.
Food and liquids is a given. You'll be surprised how thirsty you get drilling 76 holes into a piece of wood. I'm not even gonna talk about sanding those holes..
I say that time investment is an additional cost because whenever you spend your time doing something, you are making a choice to do that particular thing over something else.

THE RULES OF THE GAME
Here's an abbreviated set of rules.
• The object of the game is to be the last player remaining on the board. You eliminate other players by capturing their marbles.
• Gameplay is turn-based much like Checkers or Spades, and is played by 2 or 4 players.
• Movement is determine by the roll of a die. Movement restrictions are explained in detail in the instruction manual.
• White marbles are placed on bridges that link movement from one quadrant of the board to another.
• Landing on white marbles has positive consequences.
• Black marbles (not pictured) are included for an optional gameplay variation, explained in the instruction manual. Landing on black marbles has negative consequences.

FINAL THOUGHTS
First of all I'd like to say thanks. Whether you decide to support this endeavor or not, I appreciate you reading what I have to say.
I'm a man who believes in taking action. Regardless if the funding goal is reached or not, I consider this experience a success. When you try something, whether you fail or succeed, you can always take away something positive from that experience.
I leave you with this: the 2009 holiday season is nearing, and Remainder is a unique game. If you or someone you know likes a little friendly competition, try it out. I guarantee it'll put a smile on your face :)

Funding Unsuccessful

This project reached the deadline without achieving its funding goal on November 1.

Pledge $50 or more

You get everything you need to play the game. The board is made of quality wood and sanded to a fine finish. Marbles come in a handy carrying sack. Complete rulebook is included. "1st Edition" engraved on the side of the board.

Backer 1 BACKER

Pledge $100 or more

In addition to everything above, the wood is stained and finished with a clear protective gloss. You get to customize certain aspects of the creation process like wood stain, board size, etc. You also get a number of different dice (6-sided, 5-sided, etc) which allows you to experiment with game times. The more sides a die has, the quicker the game can potentially end, and the more strategy that is involved.

What's up guys (and gals). If I could describe myself in a professional manner using just one phrase, I would call myself an independent game developer.

It doesn't encompass everything I stand for of course, but for the time being it is the one area in which I have the most expertise.

I grew up playing video games on systems like the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. I had so much fun with these systems, that I was eventually inspired to try my own hand at making games.

For over seven years now, I have been making games as a hobby. I tasted a little success early on, and once I realized that I could put a smile on someone's face through something I created, I was hooked.

It's all about the user experience. It's all about the customer. It's all about you. What I bring to the table is a means by which you can enjoy yourself if you so desire.
