Silo is an exciting one-on-one strategy game, where you and/or your kids will dramatically sharpen your math skills.

What's Silo?

Silo is a small town, handcrafted, wooden, board game, but my dream is to make it big as a video game. If you can do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, then you will pick up Silo right away. It can be played by the most casual of players or your run of the mill math prodigy. Trust us, we've played with them both.

  • Silo is a strategy game, where you have to move 5 balls through your two silos, in order to win.
  • Each silo has 6 levels; each level represented by a number.
  • Players have the same numbers on the their board as their opponent.
  • Moving to a new level requires you roll 5 dice and then execute a custom math equation, using any combination of those dice, that equals the number on the level. [Note: We calculate the numbers as you go, so, for example, 3+1 = 4X5 = 20. This is how the board game is played and we have retained the integrity.]
  • Your equation needs to be created within a time limit of 30 or 60 seconds.
  • The first player with 5 balls out wins.

The best part? You never play the same board twice, because the numbers change with each game. It's challenging, yet easy to play. The more you play the better you get (You little genius!), so we we gradually increase the difficulty as you play. Smarter games. Smarter people. That's our mantra.

Silo was originally designed to be played one on one, but we have taken steps to ensure that it can be enjoyed at any time, as it's perfect for planes, trains and automobiles (as long as you're not doing the driving or with Steve Martin). All of the social mechanics will be built right in, so that you can have one-on-one battles with your friends and bitter rivals....ok, maybe just total strangers who enjoy the game as well.

The best part, which ensures that your contribution will actually make this a reality, is that, as of July 10, 2012, we have a working prototype in place. As software, it works and it works flawlessly. It's an exciting milestone for us. Our challenge lies in the fact that this game is set to be designed for Facebook, iOS, Android, Windows 8 and Kindle, plus we have committed to a children's version, called Silo Jr, and as we say in the old country of Boston, "your kids ahhh gonna be wicked smaht". Because we've set a goal to be on all of these platforms by the fall, we need resources, or better yet, people, who can get us there, because with 3 more titles in the waiting, we have more work than we can handle. It's as simple as that. We believe in this so much that we are setting a 2 week fundraising time limit.

We have tasked ourselves with creating smart, original, games that appeal to a broad audience. I grew up in a family that created in-house board games, but for the better part of 14+ years my parents have been trying to bring these hand-crafted board games to life. Always there to lend support or modify the game mechanics, I decided the best way to accomplish this, today, is via software. The costs are lower and the ability to distribute to the masses is far more attainable.

Here is the original Silo, handcrafted, wooden version that started it all.

Who is building this?

Currently we are a team of 3. Rich DiBona is on engineering. Brian Thomas is on design and Marc Girolimetti is on drums. OK, Marc's got game development and the business covered. Rich's talents are behind the MITX award-winning, Episend, as well as Flimp. Brian designed the original UI for Task Rabbit and Marc has been the brainchild behind successful branded-gaming experiences for FedEx (in partnership with the NBA, PGA and NASCAR), Playboy and Warner Brothers, for the film "A Scanner Darkly".

I look forward to updating you on our progress. You can also follow along on Twitter and Facebook. Please, don't be afraid to drop us a line. We love the company.

FAQ

  • Yes. Math is a universal skill and utilizing it is like riding a bike. You just hop on and go.

  • Though we have yet to commission Harvard to conduct a research project for us, every person who has ever played, claims that creating the equations gradually becomes easier. It makes sense, because you're exercising your brain.

  • When I was a kid I asked my Dad to tell me stories of life in the gang. He never liked talking about himself, but he tried to downplay the gang aspect, until I once responded with "Dad, can you tell me something? Were you guys more like the Sharks or the Jets and who was the lead dancer?" I think I got punished for that one.
