A place to share and compare stories and advice from communities working to assert their rights.
We are young independent publishers trying to create a future for ourselves. We collect, edit, and publish original content written by over ninety of the Northwest's leaders. We focus on the Dirt, Water, Air, Flora, Fauna, and Ideas of the Northwest, and the American Community Rights Movement. We believe that producing information on these topics can help protect our planet and its people from exploitation and contamination, and empower its citizens and communities to retake control of the natural resources they require for a fulfilling life. Much of the information we produce will never go out of date and can be used for purely educational purposes.
We hope to one day financially support a staff of at least five.
This Kickstarter will pay for website updates to Readthedirt.org that will make possible our integrated coverage of the American Community Rights Movement and printing costs for a "Best of the Early Years Read the Dirt Magazine."
If we exceed our fundraising goal we will accomplish much more.
Reaching our goal will pay for:
Website updates ($1,600):
-The expansion of our Community Rights section will make possible a niche for information on what some are calling the American Community Rights Movement. This will create a place for the stories we have been collecting from citizens across the country who are taking a rights-based approach to protecting their communities from corporate harms. (See examples: 1, 2, 3). The expanded section will include a sub-section focusing on American history, the Abolitionists, Suffragists, and Civil Rights movements, as well as the history of corporate constitutional rights in America. Also included will be the capacity to archive our Community Rights information by geographic location, making possible an interactive map, a Community Rights information feed from external sources. The section will be made visually attractive and interactive, for you!
-Creation of an online user-friendly archive for readers and teachers.
Printing costs ($1,400):
When we reach our goal we will print and distribute a "Best of the Early Years Read the Dirt Magazine." We will distribute at farmer's markets (Growing Washington, our partner, delivers to 20+ regional markets), regional businesses, schools, neighborhood associations, universities, and libraries. The stories featured will include a history lesson on American mining policy, a bilingual piece by and about a Mexican farmer, a piece on how farming empowers refugees in South Seattle, a piece by the editor of Northwest Sportsman on how powerful hunters and environmentalists would be if they collaborated, a piece on Walla Walla, WA's innovative water governance, a piece on Spokane, WA's efforts to elevate its right to self-governance, the rights of neighborhood associations, the Spokane River, and employees above corporate rights in Spokane, a piece on the role of government transparency and freedom of information in the protection of natural ecosystems and resources, an informative piece on the functionality of WA's Conservation Districts, a piece on how cities can lead the way in adapting to and mitigating climate change, and more.
Exceeding our goal $3,000.00 will:
-Reaching $3,500 will pay for pamphlets for Growing Washington Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members. Growing Washington's CSA program serves 1,200+ citizens in northwest Washington. We want to give each of them multiple Read the Dirt zines throughout the coming growing season.
-Reaching $4,200 will make possible a 2nd Read the Dirt Writing Competition. Costs include posters for advertising, and printing of a Winners' Zine to share the results with the public. See here for the results of our 1st Annual Writing Competition. This type of community involvement increases readership and public participation in the publication, as well as gets people thinking!
-$5,200 would put $1,000 into a fund for future special edition Read the Dirt magazines. Our next special edition magazine will feature citizen's stories who have worked to pass Community Bills of Rights in their community.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Can we execute? We have existed for two years with absolutely NO funding. To see what we can do with no help take a look at what we have ALREADY done (readthedirt.org).
To complete this project we will have to maintain the energy we have enjoyed over the past two years. The good news is that Simon Davis-Cohen just graduated. Free from the demands of University, he will now have MUCH more time to devote to Read the Dirt, and the execution of this project.
Challenges will include communicating with our web-designers, designing the Best of the Early Years Read the Dirt Magazine, and printing the magazine. We are qualified to overcome these challenges because we have a working relationship with our designers, have designed mini-magazines in the past, and are capable of finding a printing service.
