A glimpse of death
Matthew Stuart, designer of Arc’s forthcoming issue has just given us a sneak preview of what the upcoming publication will look like. Suiting the issue’s theme – death – the hand-made mock-up is a combination of black on white and white on black background.

What is immediately visible is that this magazine is far more content-heavy than any of its predecessors. Matthew has elegantly solved the issue of space and decided to overlay the text of each article with its title. This produces a startling effect, challenging the reader to read, rather than skim. The text becomes a tiny bit confrontational yet the invitation to engage a charming one.
Staying true to the mantra ‘form equals content’, the copy typeface subtly morphs to suit the type of article. For example, the use of type in Ali Smith’s short story appears to have been taken straight from a paperback novel.
The texts about designer Baskerville, whose corpse was so frequently dug up and re-buried, interrupt the editorial until both the words, and so the man, find their final resting place towards the end of our issue.
Matthew and Pedro are still working on design but some layout devices, the titling, the black and white print, and the copy typeface are now sticking firm. The pledges from backers and the words of support online have given them confidence that the thought and care they put into the design process is appreciated and worthwhile. And so, from all of us, thank you.
Onwards.
