Behind all the legal jargon and political posturing in the battles over intimacy and marriage, is a story of two people.
We all need love in our lives.
And we should all have the right to be with the one we love.
Help us present a new dance about passion, partnering, and puckering up with 24 takes on a love story, using City Hall as the backdrop. From proposition 1 in North Carolina to President Obama's shifting views on same-sex marriage, our nation continues its grinding battle over the governing of intimacy, marriage, and our civil rights. Two by 24: Love on Loop serves as a reminder that beneath all the legal jargon and political posturing, there is always a story of two people. Two people who flirt, fight, make-up, support, care, and love each other.
On June 19, RAWdance will fill UN Plaza with an 8-hour display of public affection, a contemporary dance installation on the experiences we all share of loving and being loved, needing and being needed. As the title suggests, 12 couples - 24 dancers in all - will take turns performing a 20-minute duet in a loop for a total of 24 performances over the course of the day, highlighting the essential commonality of connection that transcends all lines of color, gender, sexuality, and culture. Though all couples share the same basic duet, no two loops are identical. Just as each of us brings our own histories and experiences to our relationships, each couple will bring something unique to the performance.
Composer Dan Wool, who has scored over 35 feature films and TV projects, as well as dances for choreographer Liss Fain and AXIS Dance Company, is creating a new soundscore for the piece. For this project, RAWdance’s five members are joined by 19 performers with résumés including companies such as ODC/Dance, Martha Graham Dance Company, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Robert Moses’ Kin, Kunst-Stoff, Printz Dance Project, and more. The live performance of Two by 24 will also be used as the basis for a new film project by RAPT Productions, in collaboration with RAWdance, creating a standalone dance film from the eight-hours of dancing. This film provides an additional platform to share our reminder of the quintessence of love.
Two by 24: Love on Loop has been made possible through generous financial and in-kind support of the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commision, and the Art Institute of California. We have raised over $20,000 for the project. But there are still many expenses that need covering. We're looking to raise $5700 to ensure artists are fairly paid for their talent and commitment and to cover the high cost of rehearsal space in preparation for the premiere.
We need an additional $4800 to supplement the dancers' pay ($200/each for 24 dancers) and $900 for rehearsals (45 hrs. at $20/hr). Any amount helps and is deeply appreciated. Join us in bringing this unique work to life. RAWdance is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (EIN: 2249257). Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
We love love, and we love you for your support. Thank you!
