"Range-of-(e)Motion Dances" has been invited to dance at the Arizona Dance Festival 2011. I need your help!!
Dear friends and patrons of the arts,
As some of you know, I have been a dancer and a choreographer. Although that's been on the back-burner for a while, Arizona, my favorite state, has beckoned!
Late in August, it was announced that 2 out of 3 of of my choreographic submissions for "Brian Benington's 'Range of (e)Motion Dances'" had been selected to be performed in the Arizona Dance Festival 2011 at the Tempe Center for the Arts on October 7th and 8th. (Range-of-(e)Motion Dances is the vehicle for my solo dance performances; and I will use that appellation there).
I am excited at this opportunity to perform as an older dancer; at my age this doesn't happen often! I feel that by dancing I may both question and challenge myself and others as to how one faces up to the process of aging, of injuries, and of illness.
However, I need your help in raising funds to cover -- not only the $300 festival participation fee -- but the price of an airline ticket, a motel/hotel stay, food, and a rental car, also. Using all the online discount sources that are available, I'm estimating a total cost of plus/minus $700.
A LITTLE INFORMATION: The dances I will perform interest me because they easily span the borders between motion and kinetics, and the spaces where motion broadens into emotion.
Random Resonations, is a solo I choreographed in response to the "boundless, random resonations of space"; Angel's Landing, a poignant, minimalistic solo, was choreographed for me by Kelly Roth, a Nevada-based choreographer and friend. (I am taking this in place of one of my own dances). Kelly describes it as "the kinetic contemplation of a life predicament, a place at once spatial, emotional."
I hope you will help me answer this "call" to perform. It means a lot to me!
When I began doing solo dance performances originally, it was with the determination to share, express, and celebrate the wonder of the individual persona, and to affirm through dance a search for positive human values. But I've come to realize since, that our lives are so inextricably bound up in the web of life we are surrounded by—the people we love, strangers, acquaintances, plants, animals, things, places, and events—that the smallest ripple of thought or word or action has its effect.
"Range-of-(e)Motion Dances" is about those connections.
Yours Sincerely,
Brian G. Benington
