About this project

Hungry began its life as a short story in April, 2005. I was on a climbing trip near Tombstone, AZ, and as my buddies were on the rock, I was on the ground, protecting our gear and keeping an eye on the dog. With a 357 magnum on my hip, no less. As I was sitting there, I started thinking about how unfortunate it would be to have to eat your friend to survive. It turned into a nice little story in a nice little notebook that has since been lost.

Between 2005 and 2008, the story grew in size and scope until it became a novel (currently published on opheliastreet.com) about a young man who gets famous after surviving a terrible accident and finds himself involved with an underground cannibalistic organization.

One day, through some incredibly serendipitous circumstances, a lovely woman who owns her own production company happened to read the novel, and she requested that I write a script. She wanted to produce and direct the film adaptation of my book! So the script was conceived. Unfortunately, she and I have since parted ways, but the script has been written, rewritten, edited, and edited again and again. And the show of support I have received from family, friends, and friendly acquaintances has been so strong that I have decided to press on and see what I can do with this.

Only, “I” is now “we”, and I think I like it better that way.

Hungry is a black comedy. After cannibalizing his friends to survive a mountainside plane crash, Travis finds himself a national phenomenon. But when his fame gets him involved with a secret group of the Pittsburgh elite, the feast has only just begun, and he must find a way to make the killing (and eating) stop.

This is a small independent film with a cast and crew of around 50 local artists, performers, and friends. We are shooting the entire thing locally and using only local talent. Pittsburgh’s cultural scene is growing like a weed, particularly in the area of cinema, and we want to make a film that speaks to the ability of our community to work together to produce something that is both high-quality and commercially viable.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 ($2,500 here on Kickstarter.com) for things such as backup equipment, permits, insurance, catering (they don’t call them ‘starving artists’ for nothing), and any number of unforeseeable circumstances. We are confident that with the help of local businesses and residents, we will reach that goal. But it’s impossible to reach it without asking.

We’re simple. We don’t want much.

We want to make good movies, in Pittsburgh, with fellow Pittsburghers (and maybe a few outsiders, if they cut the mustard). We believe that a strong sense of community is essential to great art as well as to great life, and we want to help grow that community by producing films that showcase our city and our people. We want to work with friends because we don’t want it to feel like work.

See? Simple.
