Update #9: Final update: Videos, photos, thanks

Posted on July 15, 2010

Hi everyone,

This Tuesday, a horde of vuvuzela players in bright yellow BP Blows t-shirts took to the street in front of BP headquarters in London. For almost 15 minutes (until the cops showed up), they blew the most annoying sound into the air directly at BP headquarters. You made that happen.

All told, you raised $6,846 for the Gulf Disaster Fund, kept public attention focused on BP even while basketball players were traded and Justin Bieber rumors swirled, and exacted a bit of public punishment on some of the most egregious destroyers of the planet.

Backers: Thanks for all your help, both financially and through spreading the word.
Volunteers: Thanks for subjecting yourselves to that volume of irritating noise for a good cause.
Babelgum: Thanks for being my eyes and ears on the ground in London, helping me organize this from across the sea, and covering the event like pros.

Here is a links to Babelgum's coverage, with video of the event, interviews, and photos
http://www.babelgum.com/vuvuzelasforbp

Thanks again everyone,
Adam Quirk

Update #8: Tuesday 7/13 - Today is the day.

Posted on July 12, 2010

Meet at St James Square Garden at noon to pick up your free Vuvuzela and BP Blows Tshirt.

Once the crowd has gathered, everyone will walk over to BP HQ at 1 St James Square and start to blow.

Several news crews will be there, and our friends at Babelgum will have a video crew as well.

Thanks again,
Adam

This was yesterday guys! The protest went down. Babelgum has some coverage up here:
      http://www.babelgum.com/vuvuzelasforbp

Their video should be up soon!

@morgantor all the money was donated to the relief effort. Read the updates. This was about BP, not about oil. Haters gonna hate.

Update #6: Success!

Posted on July 7, 2010

Happily, all of the $6,846 we raised for this campaign is going to the Gulf Disaster Fund.

Ben from the Cheezburger Network sent me $500 via paypal that I'll use to cover any costs accrued by the volunteers on the ground for the Experimental Vuvuzela Exhalation Procedure in London.

For those of you that have volunteered to blow a horn or help organize, I'll be emailing you tomorrow.

For any of you who are interested in such things, please email me: quirk@wreckandsalvage.com with the subject "Vuvuzela Volunteer"

Stay tuned for more dispatches as they are warranted.

End transmission.

Update #5: Two huge new backers!

Posted on July 7, 2010

Great news! Two things:

1. Babelgum, a web and Mobile video content platform historically committed to environmental issues, has jumped on board with the Vuvuzelas for BP project in a big way. They have agreed to donate $2,000, and will be sending a professional video production crew to cover the event in London. They're also planning to shoot some behind-the-scenes footage with myself and the other organizers and volunteers, as well as some more in-depth coverage of the people behind the Gulf Disaster Fund. Thanks Babelgum!

2. Ben Huh of The Cheezburger Network has agreed to donate $1,000 to the project as well! He is going to send me half of that directly so that we don't have to wait until all these funds clear to commence the Vuvuzela Deployment. The Cheezburger Network is also planning to help distribute the video once Babelgum has finished up the edit after the event. Thanks Ben!

Both Babelgum and Cheezburger Network are also going to be helping to kick up some more pledges from across the globe today. We're going to try to get the final tally up to $10,000, but the project ends at 7pm EST. If you know someone who either hates BP, loves the Gulf of Mexico, hates vuvuzelas, or has a sense of humor, please send them our way!

Thanks everyone,
Adam

What!? This is so awesome! I've loved the Cheezburger websites since they first started. This is turning out to be quite a viral charity. So happy to be a part of this!

Update #4: $4,000

Posted on July 2, 2010

Well this has surpassed anything I expected. We're going to be able to donate thousands of dollars to the Gulf Disaster Fund, and exact a bit of revenge on one of the companies that caused this destruction.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the project. I'll be posting more updates here and on my twitter (@quirk) as the day approaches. We're not going to make the exact date public, so please pledge if you haven't already so that you can get the private updates that will eventually announce the date/time/coordinates of the Dynamic Vuvuzela Deployment Operation 2010!

Hey, hey, careful with revealing the time of action to anyone but the participants until you strike. Ten to one BP's 'donated' something here specifically to get that information early and help El Presedente avoid it.

Update #3: Volunteer

Posted on June 30, 2010

Folks in the UK, it's your turn now.

This thing needs volunteers. If you would like to do any of the following, please email me (quirk @ wreckandsalvage.com) with the words "Vuvuzela Volunteer" in the subject line:

Videographers (especially ENG, or citizen journalist folks)
Photographers
Vuvuzela players (no special skills required)
Organizers

Thanks,
AQ

why can't we make this and internationa day of protest to bring attention to the oil spill? Can you imagine vuvulzela being blasted all over the world at the same time?

Update #2: Funded!

Posted on June 30, 2010

All money above and beyond the $1,000 for the vuvuzela concert is going directly to the Gulf Disaster Fund, so please feel free to keep pledging here or going directly to the Center for Biological Diversity's site:
http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/public_lands/energy/dirty_energy_development/oil_and_gas/gulf_oil_spill/index.html

Thanks everyone for pledging, and for spreading the word.

All funders will get an update as soon as the dust settles to let you know our next steps in planning the mission.

If anyone knows video people (especially ENGs) or photographers in London, please let me know.

Thanks,
Adam

Yes! One more candle added to the fire under BP. Can't wait to see some youtube action of the event.

Thanks for the great idea, Adam. It may not change much, but even a tiny mark left is something. And besides... Excellent lulz.

Update #1: Excess funding goes to Gulf Disaster Fund

Posted on June 30, 2010

I have been told that there are some places to find vuvuzelas for under $5.

This means we already have enough to buy 100 vuvuzelas.

This means we are going to have around $1000 of extra financing, which will go directly to the Gulf Disaster Fund set up by the Center for Biological Diversity:
http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/public_lands/energy/dirty_energy_development/oil_and_gas/gulf_oil_spill/index.html

Win win.

Thanks for supporting this everyone.

Perhaps you could also see if someone has access to an huge air horn that they wouldn't mind brining to that event as well. Those really loud ones they play at hockey games. You don't have to buy/rent it because I'm sure there will be plenty of people willing to help annoy BP. Just make a craigslist posting and see what happens. Hehehe.
