About this project

Quartet Rouge is raring to record our first album.  We've composed, arranged, rehearsed and performed. . . we're ready!

Instead of bringing to you another traditional string quartet recording of Vivaldi, Mozart or Beethoven, we're more interested in playing Muse, Amy Winehouse, and the Rolling Stones. We have taken the songs we love and given them original arrangements, percussive effects (on our instruments) and all.

We're lucky enough to have talented friends to help us with this endeavor, but recording and promoting an album (dang!) takes a considerable amount of time, energy, and funding.  Generous donations will go toward studio time (producing, engineering, editing), making multiple reproductions of the finished product, graphic design, promotional materials (postcards, posters, etc), and hopefully we'll have money leftover for any unforeseen expenses. Ugh. . unforeseen expenses.

We've already been lining up gigs throughout the bay area, and we want to leave our audience a little something to remember us by.  Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see if we end up performing in a venue near you.  We plan on putting everyone's help (aka: dinero) where are mouths are.

A Kickstarter video will be coming to you very soon, but in the meanwhile, you can catch our musical stylings on YouTube.  We also invite you to follow us on Twitter under the handle of Quartet Rouge or become a fan on Facebook.

We thank you for your time and consideration and hope that you'll keep Quartet Rouge on your radar!

Quartet Rouge

Has not connected their Facebook account.

We are four gals who realized in their wee years that music would be our life-long work and love. Classically trained for most of our lives, we've been schooled by amazing artists about the virtues of Bach, Brahms and Bartok. We love our classical roots but that doesn't mean our admiration for other artists and genres stop there. Among our arrangements, you'll find everything from Bill Withers to Oasis to the White Rabbits. We want to show everyone exactly how diverse we can be.

Just as varied as our tastes in music, Quartet Rouge is sort of like Charlie's Angels. Except there are four of us. And we don't fight crime. Nor wield weapons. Maybe Rachel could use that endpin for something. . . but we do come from very different backgrounds. Here's a little about us:

GENIE WIE, VIOLIN: A native of Chicago and immigrant to San Francisco in August 2010, Genie currently teaches and freelances with bay area orchestras and ensembles. She is in love with her new surroundings and resides at her "hippie hideout" among the trees, bushes, hens, bees, dogs, and cats in the Castro. When she doesn't have the violin in hand, she can be found hiking the nearby terrain or at the Global Yoga Studio sweating her butt off. . . literally.

KATHY MARSHALL, VIOLIN: A native to the West Coast, Kathy hails from Ventura and currently lives in San Rafael. She has studied in Spain and traveled extensively all over the world and even at one point, performed in a purple afro wig throughout Italy. She'll soon be taking a week off from her Quartet Rouge duties as she is currently training to run a marathon in Paris (over-a-cheeve-uhr). Kathy teaches and freelances with bay area orchestras and ensembles. She is devoted to her handsome husband and adorable pup, Moofa (not necessarily in that order).

MICHI ACERAT, VIOLA: Finally, a group member who hails from San Francisco! Lucky for violists all over the world, this sassy, cool gal crossed over to the dark side from her original instrument, the violin, to viola. She has cut recordings with the likes of The Monolith, John Vanderslice, and Sun Kil Moon with whom she also embarked on tours throughout the U.S. and Europe. You can also find her teaching and freelancing throughout the bay area (although not in orchestras, she needs her space).

RACHEL TURNER HOUK, CELLO: Now get this, Rachel is mommy to two year old Maggie and eight-month old Thaddeus. She teaches music at an East Oakland elementary school and she's founder of Synchronicity Strings. (Is she nuts or what?) Rachel crossed over the Atlantic (as well as most of the U.S.) from England, and she is now a proud resident of Oakland. Plus, she freelances as well. If you caught the production of "Next to Normal" in SF, you probably already heard her.
