About this project

Help Save Putty Hill!

It’s official: me and my collaborators are in the final stages of completing Putty Hill, a Baltimore feature film shot this past summer. We are extremely excited to announce that the movie will have its World Premiere at the 60th edition of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival on Thursday, February 18… BUT we have a long way to go in order to get there and we need your help!

As some of you may know, after the success of my first film, Hamilton (2006), I spent the last few years developing an original screenplay, Metal Gods, a coming-of-age tale about a group of marginalized youth skirting the fringes of Baltimore city. The script received very positive industry attention, winning the Panasonic Digital Filmmaking Grand Prize at IFP’s Independent Film Week in 2008. We set up a schedule to shoot Metal Gods in August of 2009, but when financing ultimately fell through, we had to shelve the project. In its wake, I wrote a scenario featuring many of the same players that were assembled for Metal Gods (almost entirely non-professionals, found at metal shows, malls, and local auditions). I enlisted a small and dedicated crew, and with the most generous support from citizens and businesses in Baltimore City (providing locations, permits, meals, and more), we shot Putty Hill in twelve hot summer days.

Putty Hill was a magical collaboration. And, remarkably, it was produced on a shoe-string budget, a truly independent venture realized through the contributions of friends and plenty of good will. With this Kickstarter Campaign, we hope to continue in that spirit and raise a minimum of $10,000 to help us finish the movie for our premiere. We’re covering costs with credit cards at the moment, and facing considerable post-production expenses, including color correction, sound mixing, and outputting the movie to an HDCam Master for exhibition. In addition to this, we are looking at costly marketing expenses including hiring publicists, printing promotional materials, finishing our website, etc., as well as travel for Berlin and several upcoming festival screenings around the world.

Please watch the trailer, visit our website, learn about the film, and if it feels right, contribute to the film through the incentive levels we put forth. The minimum donation is just one dollar, and every donation counts. If you are behind us, please help spread the word by sending emails, posting on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter), and talking to people the old-fashioned way about this great new film from Baltimore.

Many thanks, in advance, for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Matt Porterfield
