About this project
My plan is to build a mobile print shop in the back of an old delivery truck. Within these tight quarters, I'll create an efficient and fully functional shop, with a small table top press for printing smaller work, and a larger proof press, capable of printing larger posters.
And then I'll take this rig on the road! I plan on visiting schools, art spaces, city parks, music festivals, craft shows, parties, and anywhere else that might have an interest in learning about printing.
I find printing to be such an empowering action, and it's also just really fun to do. I want to share it with other people. And letterpress printing, specifically, has so much history and tradition behind it. I think it's a really powerful contrast to today's computerized world, and can actually serve as a useful tool to better understand that world.
I also just love to travel, to experience this enormous country of ours. To pull into a new town, walk around, and see how other people live, learn about the things that are important to them. I'm looking forward to being inspired by the places this project will take me, and the people I will meet.
The money I raise here through Kickstarter will go directly towards purchasing a used truck, taking care of any necessary repairs, and building out the back as a print shop. Any additional funds will go into programming workshops, talks, and tours. Once I'm on the road, I hope this project will be able to sustain itself through additional workshops and talks, as well as through the sale of my own artwork and printed materials along the way.
This pledge campaign will end at the beginning of a January 2011 - a new year for new adventures. I’m envisioning a roughly six-month prep stage to fix up the truck and schedule programming, and then a tentative send-off date of early June 2011. As far as the length of the tour goes, it all depends on public interest. I’m planning on a minimum of six months on the road, and I’d love to just keep going as long possible, as long as the support is still there.

Connected as Kyle Durrie (713 friends)
My name is Kyle Durrie.
I'm the proprietor of Power and Light Press, a letterpress studio based in Portland, Oregon.
I have lived in two Portlands in my life, as well as two Washingtons, one New York City, one Brunswick, and one Asheville.
I am inspired by a love of paper, lines, history, overheard conversations, logs, whiskey, trains, the color brown, the Wild West, dogs, salt water, road maps, vintage office supplies, and beards, among other things.
If I am not in my studio, I am probably out of town. Soon, I hope to be both in my studio AND out of town at the same time.
