WHAT IS POSTPUNK?
SOME WEAR LEATHER, SOME WEAR LACE will showcase the early 80s with its punk and ''proto-goth'' movement. A new wave, that was back then nameless, of music was born as a backlash to the subculture (now called postpunk). The style of postpunk fans was initially inspired by punk, while the non-punk elements were taken from the new romantic looks. In the second half of the 80s, the subculture became more ''on its own'' rather than the daughter of punk and gained a more original look, which focused on dramaticism (usually in the form of black clothing).
Around '86, the term goth slowly replaced postpunk (or new waver). In the early 90s the music started to develop and break away from the traditional postpunk sound. The name postpunk didn't really ''cover'' the scene anymore. Mainly postpunk is used to describe the music the scenegoers listened to, but since many postpunks dislike to be called goth (because of its later examples), they would rather associate themselves with their original taste in music and style: postpunk.
This is not the one and only truth about the development of goth. Some punks/newwavers/postpunks/goths from those days and from different countries explain it in another way because they have another perspective or experience with the scene. These special experiences and stories form the core our project.
WHAT'S THE BOOK GOING TO BE ABOUT?
Our endeavor is to archive and collect relevant stories and unique photos of the 80s postpunk and goth scene. The Postpunk Project aims to uncover goths and postpunks that should be displayed on an international level--the original, everyday fans of the scene. Additionally, we aim to highlight bands that shaped the scene but might have been forgotten. Our interviews with original goths and postpunks, and with writers and filmographers of the time enable us to compile a plethora of information on the time period and the scene as accurately as possible.
Ultimately, this will result in the curation of a well-designed, high quality art book full of interviews and photographs that carries the name SOME WEAR LEATHER, SOME WEAR LACE. Old and new goth fans will recognize this as a dedication to the legendary line in the a song from Sexbeat--a band that described all the peculiar sides of the '80s 'goth' scene.
WHY?
First of all, don't you feel like punk has had enough attention in the media as we do? Postpunk and goth are very underexposed even though they had a major influence on later music and fashion. Many people who were into this style back then now look back on their youth. Current young people have the tendency to look back as well: they are interested in the early development of goth music, the subculture and its non-internet focused subcultural environment.
We wish to remind the former how it was as well as to show the latter what it was like.
Dissatisfied with the few current books involving postpunk and goth (since they include the post-80s goth) we decided to stress the most important period: 1980-1990. We are especially interested in the birth of goth and the transition of punk to postpunk.

There is no question of our DEDICATION to the project. The research has been a commitment to the Postpunk Project team for over a year now... we consider this project a DONE DEAL.
Our challenge is to find a publisher to print our book. If not, we will have to self publish.
We knew coming into this that we would not make money. Our hope is to simply come out of this EVEN. We only want to show the world how beautiful goths, postpunks and the like were in this amazing era.
