Just a spin or two and your beverage of choice will seemingly mix by itself without the use of spoons, pens, sticks, keys, or fingers.
Thanks for giving our project a spin. With your help… we could start a drink revolution!
Twenty five years ago, while on a coffee break from jury duty, I poured myself a cup and noticed there were no spoons or stir-sticks in the room. Several people simply opted to take theirs black while others resorted to stirring in their coffee additives with salty fingers. I sat watching my lump of powdered creamer float in my cup and thought, there must be a better way to stir a cup of coffee without using a pencil stub, car key, or something else from the dark recesses of my pockets. It occurred to me that turning the cup a few times might actually get the coffee moving and mixing.
After several spins, the creamer disappeared and mixed stubbornly in— I patted myself on the back and drank my coffee. I decided then there must be a way to make the cup itself create more efficient friction to get the liquid swirling faster. Some kind of added vanes or blades that would act to grab the coffee (or other liquid) and spin it, mixing in the mixables. I could see it in my mind and it was good. And that's where it stayed for twenty years.
Five years ago, I was at a printing company and had stopped in at their breakroom for a cup. I noticed once again (how many times have you seen this) several dirty, community spoons left beside the sink for the next person to use. It just stuck with me that day. And, that night I was unable to sleep, thinking about how a self-stirring cup would be the answer.
Soon, my desk was covered with concepts and drawings for all sorts of self-mixing ideas. I cut styrofoam and glued plastic bits and even fashioned star and moon shapes that, when attached, also added the “grab” to move liquid in a glass. The winning idea, though, adds shaped vanes spiraling up the inside wall of a mug or glass that grab and push the liquid and swirl it rapidly, powered only by the user turning the mug itself.
We’ve been able to prototype and refine the final designs— they’re functional, attractive, and feel great in your hand, too. They make mixing any drink into an experience rather than just adding yet another mixing tool of some sort to your dishwasher.
Now, we’re ready for the next step.
This project is to produce 7,500 glass units— 2,500 each of an ice tea, tumbler and an old-fashioned style glassware. Your reward for helping us out? Be the first to enjoy your beverage of choice from the initial run of this stylish and functional self-stirring drinkware.
Yes, we have created new awards specifically for international backers! After some research, we determined that flat-rate shipping was the best solution, and international rewards are based on what we can fit into a standard box and safely ship across the ponds.
Our prototypes and a short run of mugs were manufactured in Taiwan. We’re open to considering other options and resources in order to bring production closer to home in the United States. Please send us a message through our project page if you have information to share!
Mugs are made of smooth ceramic, currently in 3 colors. The glasses are made of soda-lime.
Yes! If we are more than 100% successful with Kickstarter, we can put that extra funding into possibly manufacturing glassware in Crystal and mugs with different ceramic finishes.
Both the glasses and mugs are dishwasher safe. The mugs can be microwaved, but the glassware is not microwave safe.
You bet – stay tuned!
I would love to have these in my coffee shop/café/bar/store. Would you offer a bulk deal on a few cases?
If this project is funded, we will have a substantial stock of product produced by July. Helping to fund the project helps ensure we are successful, and gets you some sample product! After that, let’s talk!
After the project is 100% funded, we will send out a survey asking what mug style or glassware size you would like shipped, your address, email, etc. So, watch the update #2 video, think about what you will be mixing and sipping, then when you receive the survey you can let us know your InStirring style!
