Update #46: Seasonal thoughts

Posted on December 12

Greetings everyone-

I have been thinking about this Kickstarter experience recently. I have been advising a friend on his documentary project, "Woodstock: In Search of Utopia," and I can tell he doesn't believe me when I say that many of his backers will probably be strangers who come to his project via the Kickstarter site itself. And that he needs to think wider and deeper in his search for backers. I know I was skeptical myself. I had the benefit of my advisors, Mark Monlux, Robin Sloan, Loel Barr, Brad Hamman & Laurel Smith, who believed in the project sometimes more than I did which led to some spectacular results.

But that is the special alchemical magic of this model- it is not just your friends and relatives who are there for your project. When you initiate a KS project, you are throwing your artistic baby into the arms of the universe. I was so very fortunate- and stunned and thrilled- when my first new-to-me backer (Alisha Karabinus) signed up! And then another and another and another. Eventually, these new friends outnumbered the already-known backers. (What this says about the state of my social life, I don't care to speculate upon...) But however I parse it, you all came together and supported the book and my work and I am still humbled by your generosity and kindness.

My seasonal job is done for this year and I hope to be able to spend a good part of the winter working on new words and other new art. Those who want to keep up with the new work can visit my workroom or the book's page on FaceBook.

So, I gratefully wish you all the best and most joyous holidays- whatever you celebrate and wherever you celebrate them!

Polly

links to Facebook don't seem to work... I say "don't seem to work" because you never know what tiny tiny thing might be going awry... and there's always the opportunity for public displays of incompetence, etc... ever cautious of a rant too soon, (a bridge too far)

Update #45: Ephemera

Posted on October 30

Happy Hallowe'en all you wonderful folks!

The Word Project is moving forward, slowly but surely, being picked up by independent bookstores but I am always looking for more venues to pitch it to. Please send me your suggestions!

Plans are in the works for an exhibit of original art from the book - as well as new pieces destined for volume 2- at the 2012 wordxword festival in Pittsfield, MA. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will let you know.

Meanwhile, remember that "The Word Project: Odd & Obscure Words- Illustrated" makes a great holiday gift for friends and family who have been enviously eyeing and manhandling your copy!

Cheers! (Here's a piece I did trying out some transparency effects- may be applicable to a new word- who knows...)

Update #43: 12 Artists from Ulster County- And I'm One of Them!

Posted on May 7, 2011

Hi Everyone-

I am so proud and astonished to have been asked to be part of this exhibit: "12 Artists from Ulster County (NY)" at the Brooklyn Artists Gym. My works chosen for the show are not my Word Project pieces but from my works for several gallery shows. The opening is May 14th- if you are in New York City, I'd love to see you! The show runs for 2 weeks.

Update #42: Multi-media

Posted on April 11, 2011

This coming Wednesday, I will be on the radio discussing the book. The local Public Radio station, WAMC/NorthEast Public Radio, has a morning magazine show called The Roundtable from 9-11am. I will be on at 10:35, God willing and the creek don't rise.

The host of the program is Joe Donahue who besides being one of the world's really nice guys is also a voracious reader and excellent interviewer. (Yes, I am more than a little nervous about this- ulp...) I am truly fortunate that he and producer, Sarah LaDuke- another real sweetie- are giving me some air time to promote the work.

If you are outside of WAMC's catchment, you can listen on line at http://www.wamc.org

Wish me luck!

I have also started a short animated piece to promote the book. I found some absolutely lovely and quirky music by an artist who styles himself "twink." I hope to get it done soon, I'll let you know how it progresses.

Cheers!

Artist's Statement:
My current work is about animation- or the possibility of it, color, texture, and how creativity can flourish within constraints. Animation in the sense of bringing alive inanimate
materials or objects, how figures articulate. Playing with color and texture for the total joy of giving
those rods and cones a real workout. I enjoy the challenge of working within a certain level
of constraint, limitations in the form of a restricted palette of materials, size limitations, thematic unity; it forces me to be more creative and makes the process a game-and an enjoyable
one at that. I see my work as little theaters, each with its own proscenium, each bristling with
potential.
