Building blocks made from salvaged wood, designed to inspire creative thinking.
I will create an original line of children's building blocks made from salvaged wood. My goal is to educate children about where the wood came from and where it was going (i.e. the landfill) if I had not reclaimed it. I will create and include a mini-book with every set of blocks that explains the problem of useful waste in our landfills. I aim to nurture children’s creativity and imagination, fighting back against this age of electronic toys and a general "disconnect" with the physical world. These blocks are designed to inspire creative, free, and abstract form building. By playing with Creative City blocks, children will ideally cultivate new and innovative ways of thinking, which they will need one day to deal with the complex problems passed on to them by previous generations.
Greetings, Kickstarter! A friend of mine told me about Kickstarter in January, and I've been working to launch this project ever since. I am now very excited to present my first Kickstarter project: Creative City Blocks.
In 2003, when I moved into the house in Sunnyvale, CA where my grandparents had spent the Golden Years of their lives, I was fortunate to inherit my grandpa's wood shop in the garage. And hence began my love for wood working. I have been building things primarily with salvaged wood ever since, and I am now pursuing a teaching credential in Industrial Arts so that I can eventually teach wood shop at a local middle school.
I believe that vocational or career technical education can be an invaluable opportunity for children of all ages to learn how to live and work in a culturally diverse world. I think this is especially true for middle school students, who are undergoing a critical learning period during which they are developing the knowledge, tools, self-esteem, and critical thinking skills needed to succeed in high school, college, and their future careers and lives.
Each day, as I observe the amazing cognitive, physical, and social development of my two-year-old son, I'm reminded that this type of hands-on learning, creativity, resourcefulness, and critical thinking needs to be nurtured in our children at the earliest age possible. This project will hopefully encourage children to tear their attention away from their video games and televisions and instead embrace the infinite amount of latent creativity and imagination that they have within themselves. It will also teach them about how we can creatively deal with the larger social problem of good materials ending up in our landfills every day.
Plumbob.org, my website and blog, will eventually take shape as another educational project in the near future. I encourage you to check it out so that you can learn more about who I am, my teaching and building philosophies, and the broader goals I have as I embark on my journey into the public school system in order to bring value and presence back to shop classes and vocational/career technical education. In the meantime, I challenge all children, as well as the "inner children" in all of us adults, to CREATE and help me kick start this new endeavor!
All blocks are made from natural and unfinished wood, and are sanded and inspected with care to be childsafe.
