We're on the eve of our one-year anniversary after completing our Kickstarter campaign with all of your help! And what a year it has been. We finished screening Furious Beauty at the Downtown Film Festival - LA to a packed theater audience of over 200 on Sunday, July 14th, 2013. It was an overwhelming experience with folks from all walks of life coming together. Lines filled the lobby before the doors opened. Check out a smartphone video of the crowd here by Peggy Ellithorpe. And there was a Q&A with director Calvin Leung, Versa-Style cast members Jackie "Miss Funk" Lopez and Leigh "Breeze-Lee" Foaad, and moderator Tony Smith. This was followed by live dance showcase performances by members of Homeland Cultural Center, Versa-Style Next Generation, along with BBoy Don Sevilla of Funny Bones Crew (who's also the originator of the title Furious Beauty) and Daniel "Dsoul" Norwood of the Gr818ers Fam. As the conclusion of our Summer 2013 tour, this festival event was an expression of our love for the hip-hop dance community and how the arts can bring people together. Here's a recap video of the live dance showcases at the festival after party: https://vimeo.com/70442151
Versa-Style Dance Company also has been touring internationally after the festival screening wrapped. They went to Israel to teach, perform, and judge dance competitions as part of a U.S. State Department arts envoy program! This is their second international tour after having gone to Chennai, India earlier this February. Versa-Style is now back in Los Angeles and they're getting ready for their next live theatrical show (also titled Furious Beauty) at the Ford Amphitheatre on October 5, 2013.
We've also wrapped production on a new film project previously mentioned -- a short film titled Traces that was shot in New York City during one of tour stops in Manhattan this summer. It's about a son searching for his long-lost biological father in the city. Director Calvin Leung has been meeting with music composer Robben Fenderson and the short's star Daniel "Dsoul" Norwood for the film's post-production. We'll share more news on this project as it continues.
Finally, we're releasing a new poster for Furious Beauty designed by Donna "Sunny D-Lock" Arrogante. Donna has a great website called Sunnitude so please check it out. We'll continue to share more news with you about our journey!
All the best,
Calvin Leung, Jacob Rivera, Jackie Lopez, & Leigh Foaad
