About this project
Hi all,
My name is Jason Mullinax and I’m a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Takoma Park, Maryland. I’ve been recording under the name Pilesar (pronounced Pie LEE zur) for the last 12 years and after numerous DIY releases and live appearances around the East Coast, I feel it is time for me to release my first official album. “Radio Friendly,” as the album will be called, collects some of my favorite and most accessible material from my recording career. Since in many ways this will be my debut album, I want it to function on several levels.
First, I want to introduce myself to a new audience. I want to show people where I’ve been musically, where I am now and where I plan to go. I think this album will be a great starting point for people who are new to my music but I think it will be appreciated by my older fans as well.
Next, I want to up my game and having a sleek, nicely packaged CD will definitely help me move forward. I hope to use this album to get more exposure through newspaper, magazine and blog reviews, radio play (college and Web) and maybe even more live shows!
Finally, I want to take a bold step in a new direction. I have hours upon hours of recordings that have yet to see the light of day. Releasing this album will make me feel okay about closing this chapter of my development so I can move on and continue trying out new things.
I didn’t want this album to sound like just a collection of songs so I spent countless hours reviewing my tapes, trying out different track orders, and trimming the music to the form it’s in today. At this point, the track listing is set, the music is mastered and the artwork is all but finished. All that’s left is getting it duplicated!
As I child I used to love opening up records, tapes or CDs and poring over the liner notes as I listened to the music. In the age of i-Pods and MP3 downloads, I feel like the album and its packaging are becoming a lost art form. My intent is to spend around $2,000 in producing the CD with a fold-out package (6-panel digipak) complete with artwork, liner notes and lyric sheet. And, if there is any money left over, I’ll add some multimedia content, like videos of my live performances.
Some of this material has been on the Internet for years, but not in its current form. I believe this album will help me take my career to new places. If you’re remotely interested in what I’m doing, please consider donating some money to help me realize this dream. If you’re unable to support me financially, you can still help by simply passing on this information to your friends and family. Every little bit helps!
Thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you soon!
Best wishes,
Jason Mullinax

Pilesar (pronounced Pie LEE zur) began life in 1998 as a home recording project founded by multi-instrumentalist and composer Jason Mullinax. Because of his use of bizarre instrumentation, lo-fi recording techniques and quirky song structures, Jason’s work has drawn many comparisons to acts as diverse as Black Dice, Boredoms, Renaldo and the Loaf, The Residents, Ruins, Rush, Tom Waits, Ween and Frank Zappa.
Although mostly a studio endeavor, Pilesar has recently infiltrated the fertile Washington DC experimental music scene with a flurry of high profile live appearances including the Sonic Circuits Festival, Artomatic, Avant Fairfax, Electric Possible, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium stage, Strathmore Mansion, La Maison Francaise and many others.
Equally comfortable performing as a one-man-band or with a rotating cast of regular contributors, Pilesar’s main objective is to break down the unspoken wall between audience and performer by utilizing a delicate mix of humor, musicianship, crowd participation and a genre defying unpredictability. Simply put, he has fun and he wants you to have fun too.
