My Goal: To create straightforward, tasty, and unique pickled nibbles. Carrot, Turnip, Strawberry, Grape, Pumpkin & beyond
Armed with hundreds of Ball jars, I intend to introduce anyone who is willing to unique and delicious pickled nibbles. There is, after all, more to life than the cucumber.
As a jumping off point, I've fine-tuned the following treats which are ready for mass consumption:
Spicy Carrots w/ garlic & red pepper. Butternut Squash w/ clove & cinnamon. Turnips w/ turmeric & cumin. Egglplant w/ balsamic & fennel.
Strawberries w/ green peppercorns. Plums w/ ginger & cardamom. Grapes w/ cinnamon & tarragon.
My public debut will be on May 19th at Feastival, a local arts fest in my neighborhood of East Nashville. (more info at www.feastivalnashville.com) Each pint jar will be sold for approximately $4 to $10 depending on content.
Donations will go to the cost of equipment (jars and lids) and raw foods (vegetables, fruits, vinegar, spices).
I'm a pessimist, so I set my goal low. I've been floored by the response so far.
As a start-up provider of pickled goods, the best way for me to get as many folks as possible to try & love my snacks is to participate in local craft/food fairs. Space doesn't come cheap at these things ($100-$250 for a plot), and then I need to actually buy the raw goods (anywhere from $500 to $700 for jars, veg, spices, labels) & get to pickling (my time, which is priceless, of course).
$250 covers some of the goods for the first festival (feastival, in may). Extra cash goes to the cost of registering, labels, and the final batches of pickled wares.
>>>>>>> If I receive funding of at least $750, it will guarantee my ability to register for the next festival-- The Tomato Arts Fest, held in east Nashville on August 11, 2012. The fact that I want to spend my birthday in the sweltering heat confined to a 10x10 plot of land, surrounded by pickles, should tell you how dedicated/mildly obsessed I am. More info here: http://tomatoartfest.com/events
If you get me to my new goal of $2,000, the costs will be covered for the products and packaging as well for both festivals this summer.
