7 Months in; here is where we're at!
As usual we are back with a brand new update. This time its full of photo’s Vines and Youtube content because lets be honest: our writing skills are not exactly William Shakespeare poems.
Still no word from Apple....
To just kick-off with the bad news: 7 weeks one, and we are still waiting for the MFI certification... We don’t know how long it will take until our application gets reviewed but we are really looking forward to it. As it stands we have to accept it and assume we will have to create two versions: an Android and an iOS version. It’s not all bad news though; our Android controller will still support iCade like we originally planned. We’ll keep you posted!
We finally received the PCB’s :) Dale has been soldering all the microcontrollers on them so now we are able to put all the parts in this neat little package which makes testing much more fun ;)
Left: Before - Right: After
Unfortunately its not all good news, the bluetooth modules we received still have some bugs and the connection drops sometimes. We are working with our Bluetooth manufacturer to sort out the last bugs.
Our manufacturer has started the production of our slider! We should get the first pieces soon :) We are entering a decisive phase... we will visit the factories to make sure they meet our quality standards!
We also slightly changed the casing which allows us to use an of the shelf flex cable. This has several advantages like a speedier production process.
Top: New - Bottom: Old
Dale also managed to write a big part of the MCU firmware and the iCade, keyboard & gamepad mode are already working. Each mode has its own color so its easy to recognize the mode you're in. These modes will allow game developers to easily implement support for our controller because they are widely used open standards. The last thing to implement is the mouse mode and some communication profiles. Check out our Vine to see the new prototype in action!
Leonardo & Michelangelo, our package designers from Envary, have been further developing our package and we think its, well a masterpiece ;) Although these are still the early sketches, the development seems promising and we are collecting all the artwork, text and legal stuff at the moment.
By the way, as you may know, the package will be a mix of plastic and carton and you will see the closed controller through the plastic window. Now, on the carton part we want to show some awesome games that can be played with our controller. And for this one we need your help! If you guys know some awesome indie game developers or have a contact at a game studio; let us know!!!
When we say “mix of plastics and carton” we obviously mean the environmental friendly versions of them. We will use PET material and recycled carton we will use recycled carton. Our package designers are also looking into the possibilities to use the carton as efficiently as possible: for the quickstart guide we will use the cut outs parts from the packaging.
Our designer refined the last design of our website and we think it looks awesome, what do you guys think? We tried to create the website according to the latest design best practices. To make sure the website wouldn’t look too sparse we used a large background picture to create a more warm visually attractive website. Our developer started on the back-end and we hope our new website will be online soon! This way it will be easier for backers and visitors to find the latest updates, contact us and pre-order our controller. See (a mock-up of) the end result below.
Development Diaries Series
Our development diaries series continues! Our polymath Martin unleashed his skills once more and this time Jordi explains something about the website and the app. (WARNING: He told us not to post it here, because its not the, lets just say, most exciting episode ever :p)
And just like the previous month we expanded our team again: we are glad to announce we hired a new intern: please put your hands up, for JoBot! He doesn’t come from Cybertron but we still suspect there is some kind of live in him...
Also Jacques arrived and he started working on half a dozen coding projects. Besides the expansions we were also able to keep a team member; Jordi was supposed to leave us but he liked this project (and Hong Kong) so much that he decided to stay! (Thats the official story, he just couldn't bear the thought of leaving our extremely warm, likeable and talented team)
Incubation program - Cyberport
In our last update we told you that we applied for the cyberport incubation program which supports the development of Hong Kong ICT industry. And if we would pass the application it could really help us with the future development. Because Cyberport is a cluster of technology and digital companies we will have access to all kinds of equipment and services which will support our team and product development.
We have already passed the first stage: our submission had been accepted! After we had been accepted Martin pitched the business plan, and now we are awaiting the vetting committee’s final decision. It turns out that having awesome presentation skills alone won’t be enough to get accepted right away... :p
We expect to hear more next week!
