Large-format landscapes fill vacant storefront space, providing a place of refuge in Seattle's urban core.

“Pretty Vacant” is a three-month installation chosen for the Seattle Storefronts exhibition series.  This project will creatively engage vacant space in Seattle’s urban core where 18% of commercial storefronts stand empty, some becoming vandalized and neglected.  My project, “Pretty Vacant”, combines urban detritus with elements of the natural world in large-format, compelling imagery to instill a sense of refuge during these tough economic times.

In the way that weeds, wildlife, and natural growth tend to reclaim abandoned spaces and construction sites on hold, “Pretty Vacant” draws people back to a place perceived as abandoned or dangerous, instilling a sense of refuge where there is now trash, vandalism, and drug dealing.  The work will be presented as a series of full-color digital photo-murals, called "composite landscapes", featuring natural elements and urban artifacts at the ground plane with stunning skies above. The photographs will be printed on adhesive eco-vinyl to ensure the work is weatherproof and resistant to wear and tear.

I am a Seattle-based interdisciplinary artist.  My work examines the relationship between human perception and sense of place. Navigation, Intuition, and physical proximity are key components of my public works and studio practice.   Through combined techniques in sound, light, sculpture, and image, my projects are designed to creatively engage the public when and where it’s least expected.  Recent public works include skateable glass artwork for The Seattle Center Skatepark, arts-integrated master planning for Downtown Redmond, and sculptures of light, stone, and glass for two LEED certified Northwest fire stations.  “Pretty Vacant” furthers my professional work in the field by bringing large format photography to a high-profile location in Seattle’s Pioneer Square for residents and visitors of all ages, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds.

Your donation will go directly towards the design, printing, installation, and documentation of “Pretty Vacant”, ensuring that the work is produced in a professional manner and at proper scale for the site.  Thank you very much for your kind consideration.  I look forward to keeping you posted and hope to see you in Seattle!

Sincerely,

Perri Lynch
