About this project
We want to make a commercial quality typeface, and give it away for free.
Last year, we started playing with the idea of designing and distributing a typeface in the public eye, which we could then make freely available. The concept was to see if we could come up with an alternative to the common licensing model, which involves designing and developing a typeface with one's own resources, and then trying to recover the costs by selling a license to use that typeface.

This year, we’re putting that idea into effect. Through Kickstarter, we’re hoping to raise enough funds to cover the cost of developing Sauerkraut into a commercial level, open-type typeface, which upon completion, will be made freely available for download through our website. The typeface will be a single weight to begin with, and rather than upper and lower-case, each character will have at least 1-2 alternates. This will result in a full 256 character-set typeface with glyphs, ligatures and a bevy of alternates. The images you currently see of the typeface we're calling "Sauerkraut" represent our initial draft, a rough sketch of A–Z with some alternates. The working files will also be available, so that anyone can download and modify the typeface. The funding will also help to cover the printing and material costs for the pledged prizes, which we will be producing in collaboration with a number of Melbourne based printers and designers, including A Small Press, United Measures and Tim Flemming from Flatland OK.
We are really excited by the prospect of this project creating a dialogue, so please don't hesitate to contact us by electronic mail via hello at peoplecollective.com.au.
