Who am I? Who are you? We asked you the artists to explore with us, and now Peel Pages is ready to share these words & images!
What is Peel Pages about?
Peel Pages is an art and culture publication based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Starting off as a group of artist and writer friends who've often talked about the revelatory and transformative power of the arts, we want to see how art forms, shapes, (re)defines, and moves our culture for the better. As our name hints, we at Peel Pages are about digging a little deeper and showcasing artists and their works that you may not find in other traditional media; we hope that our magazine will go beyond just what the current hype is about. Secondly, we hear that bananas help ripen other fruits around them, and that all you need really is the banana peel to do so. In the same way, Peel Pages will introduce visual arts and creative writings that catalyze more complex and richer points of view.
IDENTITY: Who am I? Who are you? These are the perennial questions that define the space within and without us. In the answer to the first, we find our grounding – our reason for being. In the answer to the second, we find illumination for interpersonal relations – our reason for interacting. The human horizon offers a weighty corpus in response to these inquiries. For centuries, personal heritage, the state and institutionalized religion have dictated formulations to these questions. However, if history has taught us anything, it is that the issue of IDENTITY is anything but simple, especially when applied against the will. Indeed, its nuances transcend race, creed, tradition and the whole of anthropology. It remains for artists to advance a dialogue for the greater understanding of the question ‘WHO?’ and its plurality of replies. We at Peel Pages would like to invite you – the artist – to explore with us IDENTITY in view of your own narrative.
We are showcasing a dozen artists and writers from places as diverse as Vietnam, Boston, and Oakland. Now it's finally time see the first print issue of the magazine.
Why should I support Peel Pages?
This is a labor of love! None of our staff are getting paid, and all our designers and illustrators volunteer their hours and services because we believe in what we do. All your contribution will go towards the printing cost, event production, and promo item expenses. Remember Dumbledore's wise words on his beloved sister's grave stone: "Where your heart is, there your treasure lies also." Well it's actually from Proverbs, but you get the point. Back us up and you have our eternal gratitude :) And all the awesome rewards, including the first copy of many more beautiful and eye-opening issues to come! You'll be sewing into our dream for changing this culture one photographic essay at a time.
When will Peel Pages launch?
Actually, we had a "soft launch" about a year ago on Tumblr. In conjunction with the Peel Pages print editions, the staff also curates the blog. Like the magazine, the blog is committed to promoting the revelatory and transformative power of the arts and how it advances society. Unlike the print magazine, the blog posts updates several times a week, so be sure to visit us on a regular basis. You'll find guidelines to submit to the print edition, expositions on the quarterly themes, and ways to connect with other artist communities that we love.
We hope to wrap up our fundraising by end of this month and go straight to publishing and distributing by mid June. So please help us reach our goal of $2,000 in order to bring you the inaugural print issue on time!
Where is Peel Pages looking to distribute?
Peel Pages is for everyone! If you enjoy stunning photos, insightful essays, beautiful lyrical prose, and/or any creative expression of thoughts on people, places, and things, you’ve come to the right magazine. Our small editorial team is mostly in the SF Bay Area, and we are looking to local independent bookstores and cafes to carry our prints for now. However, as Peel Pages grows, we definitely hope to expand not only in our content, but also in readership across the States. And you can always order our issues on our Tumblr.
