About this project

“How to Jail” is the first adapted screenplay from the acclaimed novelist Dennis Tafoya (Dope Thief, The Wolves of Fairmount Park) from his short story by the same name.  The story follows Willis as he attempts to help his older brother, Henry (Peter Hansen) adjust after his recent release from the Nevada Penitentiary. To complicate matters, Kelly (Katharine Moeller), Willis' damaged neighbor, seeks refuge from her abusive husband Rufino (Robert Rodriguez) in Willis' apartment. Henry's reacts to these adjustments by reverting to his old ways, wreaking havoc on his surroundings.

This short film will be directed by Paul von Stoetzel and produced by his company Killing Joke Films in conjuncture with Brute Force Films. This film will be produced in and around the Twin Cities area in September 2011 for a projected Spring 2012 release date. Killing Joke Films has produced several award winning short films as well as their two successful feature documentaries SNUFF: a documentary about killing on camera and Scrap

We have raised enough local funds to produce our trailer and plant some seed money, but now we need to reach out to the rest of the community nationwide to help us adapt this phenomenal short story to film.  $3,000 will propel us through production and well into post production.

Dennis Tafoya is a celebrated novelist whose film rights to his 2nd book Wolves of Fairmount Park have just been sold to Robin Schorr of RCR Pictures (FrailtyThe Prince and Me, and Food Inc.)  Tafoya contacted Killing Joke Films over a year ago and began a relationship intended toward bringing more professional writers and filmmakers together.  This concept spawned Brute Force Films.

Dennis Tafoya is a Philadelphia based crime fiction writer who gained critical acclaim with his first book Dope Thief. He is a member of the Mystery Writers of America, The International Thriller Writers, and The Liars Club in Philadelphia. His 2nd novel, The Wolves of Fairmount Park has been critically hailed as "(A) mesmerizing and most impressive book... Tafoya is finding his own original voice, one that will make readers sit up and listen."- Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal.  He has also published short stories, including "How to Jail" in Philadelphia Noir, CrimefactoryzinePlots With GunsA Twist of NoirCrimewavThuglit, and Beat to a Pulp.  "How to Jail" was also resently nominated for a Spinetingler award for best short story.

FAQ

  • Fair enough. Look up our filmography and you'll see that we ALWAYS finish what we begin. Also, we have already filled almost all of our production positions and set absolute dates for production. If we did this and didn't complete then we wouldn't still be working because we would have wasted A LOT of talented people's time.

  • We are doing this to solidify the relationship between Killing Joke Films and Dennis Tafoya and his people to hopefully move forward in adapting more of his work possibly including his first novel Dope Theif. "How to Jail" will also solidifies our relationship together with the writers who are apart of Brute Force Films. The long term goal is to utilize Brute Force Films as an umbrella to help get other published writers and filmmakers together.

  • Dennis has been apart of this process every step of the way from hiring crew to auditions, drawing storyboards, and scouting locations. He even personally came to Minneapolis to help with our February fundraiser despite his very busy schedule. Even though he is in Pennsylvania we have conversed and collaborated with him every step of the way.

  • As soon as we can get them off. The most difficult item will be the Epilogue short story companion to "How to Jail" written by Dennis Tafoya because it is still being written. Otherwise we will ship everything else asap.
