Update #9: Thankyou
“Try and fail, but don't fail to try” -- Stephen Kaggwa
Our Kickstarter campaign has come to an end and unfortunately we didn’t achieve our funding goal. We appreciate those individuals who pledged – your support of Little Space Heroes means a lot to us.
While we’re disappointed, we’re not disheartened and we’re going to keep working towards our goal of creating a safe and fun virtual world for kids under 12. We’re still working towards achieving the government funding and are making good progress with game development.
We invite you to stick with us on our journey and we hope to share lots of exciting news and updates over the coming months and years. Stay tuned at http://www.littlespaceheroes.com.
Lets blast off for adventure!
Update #8: Inspiration in storytelling
Last week, Phil and myself (Paul) went to E3 to check out what's new in the electronic entertainment industry for 2011. It was my first time to the event and wow, was it mind-blowing. It’s kind of like four or five Times Squares packed together indoors.
It was great to see so many exciting games and new technology announcements. But more than the mega fanfare of the super-games corporations, we found ourselves drawn to the smaller elements, such as IndieCade, an independent Games Festival.
Another aspect that we loved was an exhibition from the Videogame History Museum. I spotted my first ever console – an Intellivision! It brought back happy early 1980s memories of me sitting there as a perky wide-eyed kid playing Astrosmash, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Frog Bog (yes, that was its name!) and Tron: Deadly Discs with my Dad.
Seeing this contrast of old games and new made me really recognise how criticial storytelling is for a game to be successful. The best games from my memories were not necessarily the most cutting edge or technically advanced – they were in fact those games that allowed me to make-believe that I was the protagonist, or to feel that I was part of, or witness to some incredible tale that was unfolding right before me.
Right from the start we've been creating Little Space Heroes as a game centered around a story - something that players can enjoy and immerse themselves in. The fact that we're making a free virtual world means it should be really easy for players to get involved and help craft the story with us. It's very exciting times!
Thanks again for your support!
Update #7: Some more artwork
This is a teeny-tiny update, but we wanted to share with you another piece of cool artwork.
In Little Space Heroes we're giving kids the option of creating one of three characters - a boy, girl or alien hero. In this image, the girl and boy hero are soaring through the sky in pursuit of a star! Hope you like it!
Update #6: Concept artwork
Check out some sketches of two of our characters.
Kira is a superb Starjet pilot and she loves to explore the galaxy.
Her friend Sparky is somewhat eccentric and prefers to spend his time fixing things and tinkering around with engines.
Update #5: What game-play style are you?
We're creating Little Space Heroes to make a safe, fun and enjoyable online virtual world for kids (and big kids too!).
We've been taking into account the different ways people like to play games. Some like to explore and discover new places or characters in the game. Some like to socialise with other players and team up to play together. Some enjoy nurturing and caring type activities - looking after pets or growing a garden for example.
What game play style are you? What about your kids? Are they explorers, nurturers, social butterflies or something else?

My passion is storytelling – I love to dream up ideas for new worlds and places, create characters and creatures and weave together events and experiences that tie them all together. Friends tell me I suffer from creative ADD – right now I’m working on two screenplays, two novels and a children’s book.
Then of course there’s Little Space Heroes – a virtual universe that I’m creating with my friends. We’re working hard to create something amazing for kids and families! Check out my project and let me know if you have any questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you!
