About this project

The Mist Wave is an interactive public art installation inspired by Under the Wave of Kanagawa of Hokusai’s print, titled The Great Wave. Based on its powerful tentacles, the contrast between the fragility of human life and the power of nature, we designed this interactive sculpture. Anatomically earth represents the skeletal body of nature and water its life’s veins.  Constructed of scaffolding pipe with a misters as fractals in each curved pipe representing the vascular system of a wave, we present Mist Wave as a landscape composition that moves from a static ornate tranquility into a dynamic vehicle of poetic expression, through the medium of line and form.

The “Mist Wave” is constructed of 2 inch steel scaffolding pipe 5 of which are bent into the form of a wave. These pipes are rigidly connected with scaffolding clamps and five weld points at the apex of each curved pipe section. At the end of each of these “wave” pipes is mounted an atomizing mist nozzle as fractals of a wave mist. This mist cools the surrounding area providing respite from the heat of the summer day… a place to relax, picnic, play or simply cool off. At it’s peak the piece stands 13 ft 6 inches high. “Mist Wave” won a competition for installation in FIGMENT NYC 2011 festival weekend, June 10th through 12th, 2011. FIGMENT doesn’t fund these installations so we’re looking for backers.
