About this project
Outpost Journal
Outpost is a biannual, non-profit print publication on innovative art, design and community action from cities that have been traditionally underexposed beyond their local contexts. Each beautifully produced and visually engaging 64-page issue of Outpost will focus on a single urban location and comes packaged with additional goodies, such as a limited edition print by an artist from the featured city (for Pittsburgh, we're thrilled to be working with Mary Tremonte of Justseeds).
Outpost is a journey into the creative heart of a place, and via features like Secretly Famous (profiles of the most infamous artsy locals), guerrilla engagements with tourist attractions (for Pittsburgh, we've commissioned a local knitter to create a cardigan for an 11-ft statue of hometown icon Mr. Rogers), historical explorations, mapping projects, and deep dives into artist collectives and organizations, Outpost plans to expose the myriad ways in which unique local communities arise through creative collaboration and production.
Exploratory and playful, critical with a sense of levity, and inspired by hand-drawn maps, flags, totem poles, poorly pixelated iPhone photos, moody landscapes, and the spirit of adventure, Outpost is dedicated to strengthening ties between communities and spreading new ideas about how creative culture can change the world.
Our inaugural issue on Pittsburgh, PA is due out in Fall 2011.

The co-founders of the magazine (Manya and Pete) and our cherished Design Director (Jay) are all obsessed with how artists choose to live and make work in cities both large and small. Between the three of us, we have lengthy publication experience at places like PAPER Magazine, Chronicle Books, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, MFAs from Yale and RISD, a Masters in Media Studies from the European Graduate School, an MBA from Columbia University, a hunger for positive change, an intense work ethic, three dogs, a deep appreciation for people who make stuff, and a healthy wanderlust.
