SLR cameras in any environment, even underwater for stills & video, maintaining functional controls, flash, tripod, tethering, etc.
OUTEX: WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED
WHAT: SLR cameras anywhere. Outex hermetically seals SLR cameras from the elements, even underwater (tested to 10 meters/33 feet), maintaining photo integrity (quality optics) and complete control over camera functionality. It's malleable, small in size, lightweight, and modular in its design - grows with your needs. This specific Kickstarter project is for the "Big O", the big Outex LCD viewfinder window, which is new. The Outex system is already available at www.Outex.com.
HOW: Works like a drysuit for your equipment. The patented Outex design aligns optics, housings, and accessories modularly. The rugged, flexible, molded housing accommodates all major camera equipment brands while maintaining tactile feel and feedback for all functional controls. Highest-quality optical components match to industry standards (filter thread size and viewfinders) and can be interchanged within our system and over time, so you can use the same optics and housing with different cameras and lenses. And our optional accessories extend modular functionality to different environmental conditions, with and without the housings. The Outex system supports flash and wireless controls, triggers, pocket wizards, tripods, grips, etc. and the housings come in different sizes to match compact bodies like Sony's NEX cameras and larger bodies like Canon's 1D or Nikon's D4 series cameras.
WHY: Competitive alternatives are inferior or costly. My cousin Roberto Miglioli and I share a love of photography. We are both outdoorsmen. And while we enjoy the benefits of point & shoot or GoPro cameras, they do not offer the same imaging quality, resources, or control, when compared to an SLR. Solutions today fall into 2 categories; bags or cases. The bags are cheap and clumsy, and so are the results. Hard cases yield good photos results, but are big, bulky, and heavy, so impractical for transport. And they start around $1,400. So one is difficult to carry, and I don't want to carry the other. Roberto came up with the original idea and used his mechanical engineering skills to develop prototypes we could use ourselves. Photographers (real ones) saw it, and had to have it. Outex was born.
THE PROJECT: THE "BIG O" VIDEO VIEWFINDER WINDOW
We've spent our time so far developing and perfecting the product concept, and evolving extensions that accommodate market-specific still photography needs like surfing, kayaking, remote control helicopter, tripod mounting, pool shoots, wedding, military, etc. We originally planned to develop a separate camcorder lineup focused on video, but quickly realized we're better served by an SLR video solution since so much video capture has migrated to SLR cameras instead. The "Big O" is that solution! The video/LCD viewfinder serves both still and video markets, adheres to the modularity of our Outex system, and increases functionality and use. Your help will fund tooling, manufacture testing, and production. By supporting our project you'll be first in line to get the new "big O" LCD viewfinder and get special pricing on other products. You'll be able to add a dimension to your portfolio, take it on your next photo shoot, adventure, trip, or vacation.
Enjoy it. Please tell your friends. And thank you for the support!
There are too many notable customer to list. Below is a sampling that includes accolade-winning photographers from National Geographic, Red Bull, Outside Magazine, VOGUE, Illume Award Winners, and the multitude of categories mentioned: Cameron Martindell, Corey Rich, Chris Cameron, Chris Burkard, Sarah Lee, Camilla Stoddard, Ale Socci, Murilo Mattos, Jordan Manley, Cristian Sasse, Amaury Simoes, Garrett Grove, Adam DeWolfe, Jon Nash, Matt Catalano, Theo Ribeiro, Nils Nilsen, Tim McKenna, Nick Muzick, Julian Kegel, Tim Kemple, Cristiano Burmester, Michael Stokes, Anton Lorimer, Alan Eldridge III, Nicolas Teichrob, Anothony Bonello, Shawn Parkin, Chris Cameron, Blake Crosby, and many more.
QUICK INSTALLATION VIDEO
This time-lapse video shows one of the more elaborate Outex installation proceedures on a camera + grip + flash. The "big O" would increase the visibility of not only the viewfinder, but the camera's LCD, so you can use it for both video and still shoots. The standard Outex covers are simpler to install, but work similarly.
People often ask about being able to use their cameras with the cover since it's not transparent (Transparency would sacrifice ruggedness & durability) and the analogy I use is driving at night. Most people don't look at the buttons or zoom controls when operating their camera (like they don't look at the stick shift or pedals in a car). All they need is sensory feedback and what's in the LCD/viewfinder.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are always risks and challenges involved. Our manufacturing and production estimates are based on timelines from previous product development we've done on similar products to date, with existing manufacturing partners. If we hit our financial targets from this project, we're confident we can deliver the product - the Big O, even if there are delays in the process.
Outex is a system of modular products.
Covers are numbered based on sizes; we have 80, 100, 110, 130 to accommodate different class sizes of cameras. The optical lenses fit the filter thread size of the various lenses you want to support/use. And the Viewfinders match your camera. The "T" at the end of cameras denotes tripod support. The "F" denotes flash support.
For example:The flash kit = flash lens + flash glove = $100 You also need a Flash Cover to envelop the camera, which ranges from $90-$125. (We even have detached flash cover options.) So that's a savings when ordering thru Kickstarter pledges. Our intent was/is to keep pledge levels simple on Kickstarter.
The tripod kits work in a similar way. You need the housing/cover with tripod opening + tripod adaptor.
Hence the different levels.
That way you can invest knowing that:
- You're covering your basic needs & wants
- You're getting a good deal on Kickstarter
- The Outex system is modularly upgradeable and grows with your needs.
And feel free to refer to www.Outex.com FAQ page if more is needed, or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Outex is a weather and waterproof housing system for SLR cameras. It hermitically seals the camera from the elements so it can be used in all environmental conditions such as mud, dirt, sand, dust, wind, and even under water. Outex works like a drysuit for an SLR camera. Its latex-based housing is lightweight, compact, malleable and rugged, maintaining complete operational control over the camera’s functions, and ensuring professional grade results.
The Outex system consists of 3 parts; Housings, Optics, and Accessories. Housings are molded to contour all major camera brands and accommodate different body sizes. The Optics anchor the housings to the camera’s filter thread and viewing windows. And accessories include a host of modular attachments that accommodates lighting (flash), tripods, wide angle lenses, straps, triggers, tethers, etc. Because the system is modular, it can be used with different cameras, lenses, and accessories within a photographer’s existing toolkit. The modularity also means the Outex system grows incrementally with the user’s needs, and therefore does not require a complete new investment as the photographers upgrade their tools. Basic Outex Kits start around US $250 dollars.
Outex products are ideal for outside photography, because they completely isolate exterior elements from the camera, but maintain control and feel of the camera and maximize tactile feedback. Because Outex is lightweight and compact, it can accompany the photographer year round anywhere the camera goes tucked in a case pocket, and installed when needed in minutes.
There are benefits to point & shoot or GoPro cameras, but they do not offer the quality, resources, or imaging and functional controls of an SLR. From a housing perspective, solutions fall into 2 categories: bags and cases. Bags are cheap and clumsy, and so are the results. Hard cases yield good photo results, but are bulky, heavy, and start around $1,400 dollars. Outex is an affordable alternative combining the best of each world: professional results, light weight, compact size, and functional control.
SLR photographers photographic in extraordinary conditions or circumstances; beach, desert, pool, lake, wind, dirt, mud, rain, etc. Outex is being adopted by outdoor and adventure photographers, and a host of applications; surfing, wedding, military, kayaking, camping, climbing, fashion, swimming, etc.

Kickstarter Project - The “Big O”
Outex to date has been optimized for still photography. The big O video/LCD viewfinder serves both still and video markets, adheres to the modularity of our Outex system, and increases functionality and use to an even broader market. The kickstarter big O project allows accelerated introduction of the product into the market.
Outex is a registered brand of Lucare Corporation, based in Los Angeles California. The patented product design was developed by cousins JR deSouza and Roberto Miglioli, both enthusiast photographers and outdoorsmen. Their passion for photography was in part influenced by Jose Carlos deSouza senior, JR’s father, who loved taking pictures and collected antique cameras as a hobby. JR is a serial entrepreneur, having launched multiple brands and products like Pronto remote control in ’97, TiVo in ’99, the first 480p DVD player in the US in ’01, Walt Disney’s Mix line in ’05, the YouRockGuitar in ’09, and now Outex. Roberto is an industrial engineer specializing in precision design and mechanical fabrication.
Our modularity is a blessing for consumers, but a curse in that it creates complexity.
What I've tried to do with the Kickstarter pledges is create a balance of sorts:
- Keep it simple for people to just choose what they want without having to get an "Outex phD"
- Balance the value to our existing and new customers
- Account for that variability/modularity of options we provide
- Ensure Kickstarter pledges are a good deal
Thus, rest assured, that any Kickstarter deal offered here is at LEAST the same as if you purchased the current product from our SHOP + the Kickstarter upgrade kit. In most cases Kickstarter is a better deal because it includes the accessories I consider basic on all kits
- The STARTER kit is for everyone.
- Use PRO stuff like large-body cameras, grips, tripods, etc? Get the PRO deal.
- If a flash solution of some sort is important to you, get the FLASH pledge. We'll take care of what you need within reason (attached or detached).
And remember, the upgradeable modularity makes our value even more appealing, because you can add incrementally as needed when you want.
The logic behind not disclosing everything about some of the ancillary products, such as flash variations, tethering, wide-angle, etc, relates to intellectual property. There's a lot behind the curtain that the success of this project will fuel/accelerate. And part of the reason I created the $1K pledge.
Sorry for the long answer. Any constructive criticism on how to improve our communication is welcome.
No. The Big O does NOT impede access to any controls on your camera because it will pivot from side to side, even after installed, allowing easy access to any/all controls on any camera. You retain access.
