Sustainable Virginia flower farm is creating a nationwide CSA offering folks a chance to buy a discounted "share" of flowers from our farm in 2010.
DID YOU KNOW? Most imported flowers have a huge carbon footprint and are produced using toxic chemicals and/or petroleum based fertilizers?
Our small Virginia flower farm is creating a nationwide CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) offering folks a chance to buy a "share" of flowers from our farm in 2010. By pre-selling our sustainably grown flowers, we hope to raise the funds to design and create eco-friendly shipping boxes and packaging materials. We are working with a Virginia company to create custom flower boxes that keep the delicate blossoms fresh and intact while using recycled and recycable materials.
NOTE**CSA MEMBERSHIPS WILL BE LIMITED EACH YEAR and CHARTER MEMBERS WILL HAVE FIRST OFFERING to pre-buy our eco-flowers each year.
Our flowers are all sustainably grown using only organic (OMRI approved) fertilizers, pest control and weed control inputs. (We recently decided to drop our certification due to ridiculous costs and pain-in-the-butt paperwork, but our flowers are still grown with the same organic methods). Our flowers are fed by chicken manure (courtesy of our free-range flock) and compost teas. We enrich our soil with cover crops and use integrated pest management to handle unwanted critters.
In addition to being sustainably grown, we grow over 100 varieties of top quality flowers that would rival any big-city flower market. Our spring season starts off with tulips, ranunculus, sweet peas, snapdragons, cherry blossoms and other fragrant yummies. Summer kicks into gear with giant lilies, sunflowers, hydrangea, dahlias and a huge variety of other unique beauties. Fall is a bevy of texture and color with berries, pods and new colors and varieties of some summer favorites. We move to the hoophouse in winter where we force amaryllis, anemones, more tulips & ranunculus.....
After selling locally for the last 8 years, our hopes are to create a "family" of flower lovers around the country who will become a long-distance part of our farm through their contribution and communications. Check out our current farm website at www.backbayflower.com. In spring, we'll be launching our new site - an online retail flower market - under the name Roost Flowers and Designs (our little nod to our chickens) where folks can order bunches & bouquets of non-imported, sustainably grown flowers.
