Update #13: The Oona: Here's What's Up

Posted on August 15, 2011

Hello Oonapolians,

Here's a quick update on where we are at with all facets of the Oona.

Body and Base:

These parts are still being fabricated. We're waiting on an exact shipping date from the manufacturer, but they should be completed within a few days.

Suction Cups:

We received the new and improved suction cup samples and we're happy to say that they meet our standards for quality. We have given the manufacturer the go-ahead to start producing them and, barring any delays, we should have them in the next 4-5 weeks.

Worth the wait.

Travel Bags:

The travel bags have been delivered. Yay!

Made out of velvet, so George Costanza would approve.

Packaging:

Thank you very much for your feedback regarding the packaging design. We received some comments that our initial design was too busy. In response, we have redesigned and simplified the packaging.

We do think it's important to note something we neglected to mention last time - We have designed this packaging for the future where we will (hopefully) be in retail stores for people who have not seen our product online. Because of that, and some advice we've received from retailers, we feel it is important to show what the Oona is through images on the box. While this eliminates additional white space, this is a decision we've made in order to show the versatility of the product and draw in future Oona lovers. We hope you like it!

We also added some fun (required) legal language on the bottom/side. Please don't operate your phone while driving...

Summary:

We are feeling very positive about the progress made, and can't think you enough for your support and for going through this process with us. Barring any manufacturing delays we should have all of our pieces in 4-5 weeks and be able to start shipping to you shortly thereafter. If you have any questions about our process, please send us a message, email or tweet and we'll be happy to talk to you about it. We'll keep you posted as things progress!

Brad, Danny and Sam

PS - Here's a cool new product we came across. Just for fun. The owners saw us post this and gave us this link to save 10%: http://collagewall.com/offers/oona.

Like the above comments, I haven't received any emails in quite a while.

I backed May 12, and am in Canada.

      "Sam Gordon says:

      Hi Ken,

Thanks for checking in. Our shipping order is a combination of location and priority backers. We started with who backed us first, but then, had to break it down by region. We have shipped about half the Oonas out at this point and will keep shipping them out as quickly as possible.

      Thanks!

Emailed yesterday, response today, so let's all be patient. I'm guessing the manufacturer they sourced does them in small batches. Half isn't bad, but it's not super fast either, I was kinda hoping I'd get it before my iPhone 4S but now I know better. Keep up the creative & smart work, my favorite kickstarter projects have spawned other must have projects. How about the ability to order the flat circle aluminum base as shown in the movie?

Update #12: Oona Step Closer

Posted on July 26, 2011

Ever Patient Oona Supporters,

Thank you very much for sticking with us through this process. We understand this is taking a while to get up and running, and appreciate your support and your patience. We're now at a point where we pretty much know the timeline, so here's where we are at:

Good news: We received our final samples of the Oona body and base and they were great, so a manufacturing run is underway and we can expect a shipment in around four weeks.

Not so good news: We received what was supposed to be our final samples of the custom-designed suction cups. While they worked well at first, we were concerned with the durability of the samples the manufacturer produced. After testing them, we found that several suction cups ripped off the stud with excessive twisting (see picture below), and that is unacceptable. The manufacturer insisted that the final product would be better than the samples we received, but we are not willing to risk it. We have demanded new samples and are having the manufacturer tweak the process of over-molding the rubber onto the suction cup. We are not happy with the delay this will cause and are pushing the manufacturer to speed up the process. We apologize to you for the extra time this will take.

Yeah, ideally those two pieces would be connected.

At this point, assuming the new suction cups meet our standards, we will be able to ship the Oona(s) out in about six weeks. We understand this is taking longer than some expected, and again thank you for your patience and for your constructive feedback. The encouraging words we've received from backers have been extremely helpful. Once we are up and running, we will not forget your generosity and will reward our Kickstarter backers as best we can.

We are staying busy while we are waiting for the manufacturing to be completed. In addition to ordering the travel pouches which we previously posted, see below the near-final designs of the packaging our Oona will come in from our awesome designer Stephanie Chow.

Design for the packaging. Would love to hear your thoughts before we finalize.

Backside of the packaging. Window to show the product will be on the back.

Thanks again everyone, we'll keep you posted as soon as we have more information on timing.

PS - Here is a Kickstarter project we recently backed, and Sam swears it's not just because he has a crush on her. You can check out her music here and here.

Whoa, calm down Kevin....you should understand they're trying to make a flawless product. Respect their need to satisfy the customer.

On a side note, I agree with almost everyone. Packaging doesn't need to be crazy, especially for a product like this. Plain and simple works for me!

How do you see this product being merchandised in retail? Most devices of this sort that I've seen appear on 'wall' racks but I don't see a loop or hole-tab on the box. Also, if the front side doesn't show the actual product folks are going to have to remove it from the hook to see the back. Hmmm.

Sam Gordon on August 15, 2011

Phil: Yes, good question. There will be a plastic tab on the top of the box for retailers to hang the box on a hook. In the new design in our latest update you can see the line representing where the clear plastic tab will be attached. Here's the link: http://kck.st/q9xJzP. Thanks!
Matt and Kevin: thanks for the comments, tried to simplify the packaging and working to get the units manufactured as quick as possible.

Brad, Danny and I (Sam), all grew up together in the Bay Area. After college we split up- Sam moved to New York, Brad moved to Los Angeles and Danny moved to San Francisco. Even though we aren't close to each other, we are always in contact, skyping, texting, bouncing design and product ideas off each other. The Oona represents our first official collaboration, of which we hope there are many to come.
