Update #8 - New Digital Tier, Novella by Chris Avellone, and Translations at $2.2M
We are still going strong over here on Kickstarter and we wanted to thank everyone that has been here since the beginning as well as those of you who have come on recently to back us with your pledge. With such great support, we want to thank everyone with a new addition to the $50 and later tiers, a new $110 digital only tier, and a big change to our $2.2M stretch goal.
Oh, and what are we doing this week as to updates you might ask? Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain and Chris Avellone will be posting updates and videos all this week starting on Sep 26 with Josh, Sep 27 with Mr. Avellone and a great one from Tim over the weekend.
French, German, and Spanish Translations added at $2.2M
We are glad to announce that we will add text translations for French, German, and Spanish when we reach this goal. As we hit more of our stretch goals, we hope to be able to add even more languages as well!

Novella by Chris Avellone added for $50 and Up!
Chris Avellone has been so thankful for everyone's support that he himself has pledged to write a novella in the world of Project Eternity. We are adding that to everyone who pledges $50 and up.
New $110 Digital Only Tier
Thanks to popular demand, we are adding a new digital tier at $110 that has early beta access to the game, thanks in the credits, a postcard thanking you for your pledge (sent physically) along with all the other digital benefits of the $140 Tier. Since we added the new novella written by Chris Avellone at the $50 reward tier - that is in there as well!
Oh and we have a little piece of artwork to share as well. The following is one of our traditional race and class combinations - the Human Fighter - but he's not just any Human Fighter. He has an integral role in the story that we will be hinting at soon. Don't worry, we will also be sharing more and more of the non-traditional options in the days and weeks to come.

Just a heads-up that on the home page only the $110 tier shows the Avellone novella, rather than all the tiers >= $50. It may be worth updating those images to avoid confusion (since there are still 18 days to go). Looking forward to the finished product!

I disagree with Anders, Understanding the basic pledge of a new game is way different than understanding an entire game.
Creator Alex Cooksey on September 26, 2012
A few people were asking about pommels. Basically a sword needs to be balanced so that you and balance it on a finger a little under an inch away from the hilt / guard (you do wand the sword to have a little natural weight). This is particularly true for swords which are held with only one hand. (The way you hold two handed swords like a katana gives more strength from the body, as opposed to the single handed swords like a foil / sabre where the grip comes primarily from the strength of the second and third fingers of the hand holding the sword.)
If the sword is balanced about halfway along the blade (as this one seems to be) anyone parrying more than halfway up the blade towards the hilt will almost certainly knock the sword out of the users hand. Also their attacks would be slow and their defence even slower. They'd die quite quickly I imagine. Naturally if there was some very heavy metal making up the handle and pommel this would help the counter balance, but having a large pommel would allow the wielder to tuck it into their wrist and make it harder to be disarmed.
My pedantry abates. I'm sure this is a magical sword of +1balance.
Creator Anders Olesen on September 26, 2012
I would much rather have a devkit at 2.2 than localization - if people have pledged for this game they understand English perfectly, so since every single one of the backers understand English well enough to pledge I see little reason why localization would matter. I think it just distracts from the game. Things I would love it a higher quality sound track or something that adds to the entire game.
Creator Anders Olesen on September 26, 2012
Crowd funded games should be crowd sourced :D
Creator Anders Olesen on September 26, 2012
If you guys wanna do translation for cheap, do it via Doulingo... even though that would mean that the entire game is laid bare in a open onsite tranlation forum...
Creator Lorenzo Gaetani on September 26, 2012
this is a really interesting project, but it would be great to have italian localization too!
Creator James C King, Dread Necromanic Weresheep on September 26, 2012
@Ryan Ulch - I get what you mean, but in reality unless they are payed stretched goals, like in Reaper's kickstarter, it isn't like many individual backers are paying extra, so why not add a reason to get more backers instead. I mean, if they added Day 1 DLC, like "+$5 and you get a house, +$15 and get a new adventure" then you could go for richer content in stretch goals, but "Get us 200 more backers and everyone gets Mac support" might have one of those 200 actually back, because they know they can play it on their Mac.
Creator DeeK on September 26, 2012
@Eric Valenzuela
The stretch goals all offer something to all backers of the project. Sure, some goals have additional features that may not be used by all backers, but I contend that these features will be adequately compensated for by the new backers that they bring in. The new backers then further benefit the game as a whole, by allowing new stretch goals to be reached.
You have valid concerns about the translations. A bad translation job is next to useless for the user of that language. Obsidian have been around for quite a while though, so I trust that they've experienced the translation issue. You've got to trust 'em at some point, and I think they know their stuff well enough to warrant it.
Creator Eric Valenzuela on September 26, 2012
I think perhaps Ryan is trying to get at the fact that rather than being stretch goals which seek to offer something to ALL backers of the project, thr translation and multi-platform support only gives something to people who speak those languages/ use those platforms.
Also, it's worth mentioning that some people who are opposed to added translations (myself included) have reasons beside "I want more goldmonstersadventure!"
Here are just some of the considerations which localization entails:
http://www.insidesocialgames.com/2011/02/04/localization-is-more-than-a-game/
http://www.loekalization.com/mistakes.html
I forget where I read it- I'm pretty sure it was a Kotaku article- but a game dev they were interviewing was talking about how localization costs can be ridiculously high to the point of being prohibitive for small or indie studios- and Obsidian is crowdfunding this title.
I am perfectly fine with them offering localization, but if it's something "added-on" (i.e. it wasn't one of their original plans for the game from the get-go, but rather an added goal), it makes me worry about what it might potentially end up costing the project as a whole.
Creator Don Reba on September 26, 2012
Personally, I prefer my fighters to have exactly six sides.
Creator Luke Strain on September 26, 2012
@Ryan Ulch
They are not increasing their user base that much as most pc gamers game on windows. I am glad they are making the game more accessible. Will they make more money, yes sure. They will also make fans that often feel left out happy so it's a win-win
Creator Jazz on September 26, 2012
Hey, Ryan, not to be mean or anything, but isn't your criticism just a tad hypocritical?
Creator DeeK on September 25, 2012
@ Ryan Ulch
I'm not sure what you mean. Self serving? Mac/Linux support, languages? Seems to me anything but self serving.
As far as broad based goals ...
* $1.4m - new character class, new race, new companion
* $1.6m - new major storyline, new quests, locations, NPCs, and unique loot
* $1.8m - new class, a new race and new companion with their own quests
* $2.0m - player house, with new NPCs, a store with unique new armor, clothing and weapons, and new quests.
* $2.2m - new region, new faction, with associated new NPCs, quests, magic items, stores.
So, how are the stretch goals not offering anything more to the majority?
It's all awesome stuff, Obsidian. Love your work. Can't wait to see the new stretch goals you add.
Creator Keith McDaniel on September 25, 2012
@Ryan: Ermm...I am down for them doing these 'self serving' stretch goals. I speak English and am not half bad in Spanish. That being said, I love the idea of my French/German/Swahili/Genosian/Martian brothers being able to enjoy this in their native language regardless of whether I get any direct benefit from it.
And as far as the relationship being 'different', you're right. It is different. They provide a vision and what they, in their AMPLE experience, believe is viable within certain budget guidelines. You then decide if you want to contribute to it. The decision was easy for me, I pledged 250$. I am by no means a wealthy man, but I believe in the heart of what they're doing. I will always support good story-tellers and people who genuinely care about their art.
Creator Ryan Ulch on September 25, 2012
I am extremely disappointed in a lot of these stretch goals. We've seen Mac & Linux support and now language translations. Sorry, but these stretch goals are awfully self serving. They are continually broadening the base of users that can buy their game, either via platform or language support. They aren't offering anything more to the majority.
Please, make the game better and start offering us GAME FEATURES. Real features, not features you'd expect to offer a publisher for more money. I don't get direct profit or benefit for you adding a German translation. This relationship is different and they need to recognize that.
Creator João Varandas on September 25, 2012
Loving the style on that character.
Creator François Ancel on September 25, 2012
If you chose to do some trads, please do it right : Small team of translator, backed with full story background and generous deadline (even if it mean to patch the game later).
Creator Jennifer Snow on September 25, 2012
Nice, there are a LOT of Europeans interested in this project and hopefully the new 2.2 tier will get them to open their wallets.
Creator James Tiberius Kirk on September 25, 2012
Hmmm, might have to go for that new $140 tier. I'll go for the $50 at least.
Oh, and might I suggest another 2 stretch goals?
$?: Live orchestra recording of the score. Because it sounds great and would make the soundtrack even better!
$?: Co-op Baldur's Gate 2 style multiplayer. I never actually played BG2 this way, but I'm definitely thinking about a run through with it for Enhanced Edition. And I know others enjoyed playing this way on BG2.
Creator Dante on September 25, 2012
+1 for Italian translation
Creator Vincent Dr. Evil Altieri on September 25, 2012
I would up my pledge if you guys included Frodo's mithril chain mail shirt in one of the reward tiers. It's value is greater than that of the shire. Don't tell Bilbo though.
Creator Jhonrock on September 25, 2012
@Boris, Voice acting in other languages than english will have a high impact in the project cost, better to stick with english voice and translate only texts. I think everyone will agree with more/better content than more voice acting.
.
@Bernardo, i would like to see they bringing with the next stretch goals, translations for more languages, like italian, russian, polish and portuguese. This could be done even without costs, gathering committed volunteers among backers/fans to do the job. They are doing this with the Baldur's Gate: Enhaced Edition, and it's working, they even postponed the game release, to give it time for more translations. There's a lot of translations ongoing, portuguese included.

Creator Pedro Antonio Sanz Jiménez on September 25, 2012
One question about the novella; can you get it if you have pledged more than $50 but chosen a reward tier below $50? Or do you have to specifically chose a tier of $50 and upwards?

The ideal candidate to play Edair in a future Project Eternity movie and or mini-series would have to be Sean Bean. However, if he tries to take the ring of eternity from that dwarf you guys drew in the last update, he should meet an untimely end at the hands of a half-orc slash former elf with a massive crossbow and a really ugly face, but only after redeeming himself to the true and rightful king, posing as a ranger from the north. God I should really write this stuff down.

@gabahadatta - I disagree! For extra-authenticity, the game should have "Obsidian-mode" where the game files corrupt randomly with increasing chance as the game advances! Also crashes to desktop!
