About this project
We at Obscura Press are delighted to offer a pre-sale of our latest book Black Apple by Thatcher Hullerman Cook on Kickstater. Obscura is a non-profit organization founded in Maine with the goal of supporting the arts and arts education. We believe that publishing is an important part of this goal and established a small press for that purpose. This year we are extremely pleased to be offering this remarkable collection of photographs by a visionary documentarian.

About The Project
Black Apple is the culmination of seven months of photographing in the Ferghana Valley of Kyrgyzstan between October 2007–May 2008. During that time Thatcher lived in a village called Osh, and made many photographs in coal mining towns: Tash Kymer and Kok Jangak ... one town roughly has the definition of being called Black Apple.
Kyrgyzstan was once a part of the Soviet Union and has been struggling in the wake of its collapse. Thatcher's photographs show a bleak landscape of crumbling infrastructure and hardships, but also a hint of hope and redemption in the form of the relationships and bonds that hold the people of the region together. It is a stunning and moving body of work that we are very proud to have bound into a single collection.

About the Book
Obscura Press will be printing Black Apple this fall at Brilliant Graphics in Pennsylvania. The book will be 64 pages with 34 beautiful duo-tone photographs on a very rich paper stock. We will be printing a relatively short run so please take this opportunity to pre-order your copy.
We have been raising funds for a short time and are very close to meeting our goal for our printing costs. We have decided to use Kickstarter as a way to raise the final 15% of our costs. More importantly we wanted to offer you the opportunity to pre-order a copy of this handsome volume.
We at Obscura Press are real lovers of fine photography books and are extremely excited to contribute this volume to the world. Thank you so much for your interest!
