The Nyack Library is digitizing microfilm of the Rockland County Journal from the period that Edward Hopper lived in the village.

The Nyack Library has a collection of master negative microfilm of the Rockland County Journal that encompasses the years from 1850-1915.  This was the original weekly newspaper of the village of Nyack which is located 19 miles north of Manhattan on the west coast of the Hudson River.  Starting in June 2010, we began to digitize the newspaper and place it online at http://news.hrvh.org; a digital archive of newspapers in the Hudson Valley that is hosted by the Southeast New York Library Resources Council.   In 2011, there were over 33,000 visitors who viewed over 1 million articles on news.hrvh.org. We are currently focusing on the digitization of the newspaper for the years that the artist Edward Hopper lived in Nyack.  Edward Hopper was born in Nyack in 1882 and he spent his early life through his high school years here in Nyack.   The years we are now seeking to digitize will offer the most complete information on what life was like in Nyack in Hopper's formative years.   This will be a tremendous source for art history scholars, local historians, genealogists, and interested citizens.
