Update #25: Kickstarter II - The Return of Novacut
Update #24: Thanks to our Backers - Pledges FYI - Project News
Thanks to all our Backers!!
Ultimately the project did not meet its Kickstarter funding goal, yet we forge ahead!!
Important Info on Pledges
Meeting one of our backers in person, we were surprised by his confusion about the outcome of his pledge - he thought the amount he pledged went to support the project whether the goal was met or not. Some of you may be under the same impression.
Kickstarter only funds a project if it reaches its funding goal. If a project falls short of its goal, backers are not charged for their pledges and no funds are disbursed - Novacut's Kickstarter project falls into this category. Pledges that will support the project can be made at novacut.com
Crowdfund Novacut (for real)
By no means did the end of Kickstarter spell the end of our project. We stood up, dusted ourselves off, and set up novacut.com to accept crowdfunding donations directly. Thanks to the support of the community, the project moves forward.
The Kickstarter campaign would have guaranteed the funding needed to support the team working full-time toward the development of Novacut. So far, we have been able to continue 100% on the project, but to realize our vision, it will take the continued support of pledges from backers like you.
Project News:
UDS The team made it to Florida for the Ubuntu Developers Summit at the end of last month. We could not be more excited by the response. We rubbed shoulders with some of our Free Software heroes, hashed out tech with the very people behind projects that are the building blocks of Novacut, and shot more than 400GBs of video!
First software release A major milestone was reached yesterday as we had our fist public software release! The distributed media library component of the editor reached its first stable release!

Update #23: Trying again with smaller, incremental steps
We learned a great deal from our crowdfunding attempt on Kickstarter. Once we got the word out to the right people, enthusiastic backers came running. We just got the word out too late. (Lesson to others: better spend a month building community around your project before launching on Kickstarter!)
As it will give us face-to-face time with many CouchDB experts, we feel it's extremely important that the Novacut team be at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, which starts October 25. As this is coming up soon, we don't really have the time to do another Kickstarter campaign (although we will consider another in the future). So we're taking PayPal donations directly through our website to crowdfund this next step.
So if any of those who backed us on Kickstarter would like to help us take this more modest step, head on over to our website for details.
Again, the four of us are deeply thankful for all the support we received during our Kickstarter campaign. It was a learning experience. And we're so thankful to have connected with this many amazing people!
Update #22: We aren't going to miss a beat
So unless something surprising happens in the next hour, we wont reach our funding goal. So what? We've never been more confident that we're on the right track, that this is important, and that the timing is perfect.
We've quickly connected with a community of people who we admire deeply... truly, we've brushed shoulders with so many of our heroes during this that we feel a little star struck. So we're going to take all this energy... and move forward without missing a beat!
We don't yet know what the next step is. But there will be one and it will be soon. Expect us to announce something soon So if you want to continue this journey with us, please stay in touch with us on Twitter, identi.ca, or Facebook. And watch for updates on our blog and website.
Much love,
Jason, Tara, Jeff, and Ammon

Update #21: Silly enough to go viral?
Damnit, I just wont give up. But that's why you want me (and my team) working on this important tool for artists.
Despite being sleep deprived and a wild kind of loopy, I've been making videos describing the architecture of Novacut. The most recent talks about a feature I haven't previously discussed, and it's super duper crazy kick ass. Watch Part3 first!
