All 120V units shipped!
We’re excited to announce we’ve finished shipping to all 120V backers! We can’t wait to see what you cook for your friends and families for Thanksgiving. Please share what you cook with #nomsgiving so we can live vicariously through your photos!
Our first backer party in San Francisco was a hit! It was so much fun to meet you, and thank you for your support in person. There were lots of delicious Nomiku-made noms from our friends at St. Vincent.
We overcame the interference issues from the last update, and have passed all of the tests for CE certification. However, we have met fierce resistance from our factory on production of these units. Although we point out that Nomiku is a “portable appliance,” since it can be easily moved, a new consultant employed by the factory insists it is a “fixed appliance” due to its attachment to a pot. As a fixed appliance, Nomiku would need to be certified for underwater use, which is impossible with the current design.
We have spent hundreds of hours in arguments about this, and have agreement from several other certification authorities that Nomiku is in fact portable. We are sorely disappointed that our partner in production has put up such a roadblock to moving forward with making the 240V units.
We are pushing to start production of the 240V units regardless of the factory’s internal issues, and will continue negotiating with them daily until we can ship these units. We find it pretty absurd that we have overcome everything so far to be blocked at the last minute by the whim of a few obstinate individuals. Nevertheless, we are sure we will persevere and find a way to produce these units and get them into your hands.
Seattle throwdown and party!
Backers in the Pacific Northwest should have received an invitation to our Seattle backer party on November 18. If you’ll be in the area and want an invitation, please shoot us an e-mail at email@example.com.
We also invite everyone in the Seattle area to our Backer vs. Backer throwdown on November 17th, starting 4pm at Cheeky Cafe. Chef Andru Edwards will be facing off against Chef Chris Caliz to make the most nom-a-licious sous vide dish. Your votes will determine the winner!
Dedicated to you,
Lisa, Abe, Bam, and Patrick
Dear awesome backers,
Thank you so much for being the wind at our backs, our operations have been going smoother thanks to your thoughtful feedback. Below are our latest updates!
Second 500 batch:
We’re happy to announce our second batch of 500 120V units are shipping out on Monday. Once they pass US customs it takes 2-5 days to process before they come to the doors of backers who got in by July 18th. Monday night is the LAST CHANCE you have to update your shipping address to Patrick@Nomiku.com if you are a 120V Nomiku backer! If you plan on moving or don't have a permanent address, let Patrick know and we can hold your order for you. Don't worry-- your Nomiku will be at the warehouse when we release your order so you don't have to wait for the next shipment. If you have to change your address after Monday and your Nomiku has gone through processing, please note that this may incur an extra charge ( :-( our shipping overlords do not cut us any slack).
We are going back and forth with CE regarding a new powerboard. We submitted four last week and they have been sent back today for revision and review. The major challenge we face now with CE is the required EMI (electromagnetic interference) testing. We need to reduce the peak noise level further in order to pass, and this requires identifying the root cause and creating an alternative implementation or creating an EM (electromagnetic) filter. We are running frequent diagnostic tests to get this issue resolved as fast as possible. This is our top development priority at this time.
We are so excited to see what you are cooking! It has been a joy to gawk at unboxing pictures and the first dishes to come out of your water bath. Please post your pictures and videos on our FB page, or holla at us on Twitter and Instagram @eatnomiku with #MyFirstNom. Participating in your first meal made with Nomiku via the internets makes our insides feel like sunshine and it inspires others who are thinking about what to cook. Here are some great #MyFirstNom moments:
Backer parties and pop-up fun!:
Lastly, but not least, the SF Kickstarter Backer party is set to go on Wednesday, October 16! There will be delicious sous vide hors d’oeuvres, adult refreshments, dancing, and demos. We have sent backers who live in SF and within a one-hour drive of the city an invitation, please let us know if you haven’t received one or if you’re in another city but will serendipitously be in town to join us on the 16th.
Tomorrow we are having a sous vide demo and throwdown at Sebo in Hayes Valley! Two chefs will compete to win your stomachs starting at 1pm. The Nom team will be there from 10am to 5pm serving up perfect 64°C eggs.
Our parties in cities you voted on will roll out steadily; we aim to get our nom on with our Seattle and LA backers by the end of this year!
Lisa, Abe, and Bam
Dear Wonderful Backers,
We have come to the beginning of the sweetest, most exciting part of our journey together: the first 500 of our 120V Noms passed Chinese customs and are flying to the US! Once they pass through US customs it takes our warehouse in LA 2-5 days to process them and then they come straight to you.
We will be shipping the Noms in chronological order from when you backed us. If you backed us before June 28th, 2012 you will receive a notification email when your Nom is coming. (Please make sure your shipping information is up to date!) If you are not amongst the first 500, do not despair. This second shipment of the remaining Noms are ramping up quickly and will also be in the air soon.
Note to 240V backers, we’ve been applying for CE in parallel and they have requested that we augment our powerboard. We’ve been working aggressively with our factory to achieve this update and submit it for approval.
We will update all of you bi-weekly from now on so you know we are on top of this final stage. All shorter updates in between will be posted on FB and Twitter. And with shipping comes the arrival of our parties, classes, and pop-up stores in the cities you voted for. We will be sending out Eventbrite invites to you as the events get closer and really look forward to meeting/feeding you!
Lisa, Abe, and Bam
Your messages have been very considerate and have helped us develop the type of updates that are critical to you. You have helped us grow as a company overall. It is such a daunting but rewarding experience to be transparent; we feel as if you all have been the fourth co-founder in our company pushing and cheering us on.
We have been knee deep in mass production. This is the final step in manufacturing before we ship and is one that has required every ounce of our mental and physical energy. It feels like we just finished a marathon and are now being rewarded with a triathlon. To keep you up to date we are updating our FB page multiple times a week in order to show our production process. In this update we will go in depth.
A critical point in mass production is communication. We have trained line engineers who in turn train line workers. It has been important for us to work side-by-side with our line especially at this final stage since this will be the first time Nomikus have been mass produced on planet earth and the people who know how to put it together best is us. At the beginning of mass production we were not satisfied with some conditions (lighting, cleanliness, etc) on our line and spent the effort to move quickly to a better site. This has produced happier workers and a better yield.
Currently we have made our first 300 shippable 120V Nomikus and this number will only increase faster as workers get more familiar with the process. As soon as we have 500 Nomikus pass AQL (Acceptance Quality Limits) we will make our first shipment to you, our Kickstarter backers. You will get an email from us when we are shipping your Nom. We will continue to ship after that in batches of 1,000. Our line will run continuously and we will ship Nomikus in the order that you backed. Because it is so early in production, we cannot give a firm shipping date at the moment, but shipping is imminent and you will be the first to know when we ship.
Mechanically we have successful fixtures that take a lot of the guesswork out of how to put together a Nomiku for workers that have never put one together before. Throughout the process we have learned from watching them on what makes their jobs more efficient and adjust our fixtures accordingly.
As with every build we have ever had, whether it was EVT (Engineering Verification Testing), DVT (Design Verification Testing), or PVT (Production Verification Testing) there comes a testing process. What is unique to mass production is we take an AQL. This process allows us to not accept any critical defects (totally unacceptable: a user might get harmed, or regulations are not respected), weed out major defects (these products would usually not be considered acceptable by the end user), and keep minor defects (minor departure from specifications) to a minimum. A sampling for Nomikus run straight to testing off the line as shown above.
We are here to listen to you, please do not hesitate to send us a direct email at firstname.lastname@example.org (this email goes to all of us) or to me at email@example.com.
