Epic 5 month roadtrip to photograph America, from the roots up. Inspiration for painting a new version of Americana
American Bones Road Trip
Thank you for your time in learning about us and my project. My name is Zannah Noe and I'm a mixed media artist from San Francisco, originally from Concord, Massachusetts. Diesel Lamar is my 8 year old retired racing greyhound from Tennessee.
My work, deals with a sense of place, including portraits, landscapes and architecture. There are elements of collage, abstraction and representational images that make up my composition. I love painting from my travels and find inspiration in the differing aesthetics of various places and peoples.
I studied photography under the artist, Carrie Mae Weems and have found my photography to be indispensable to my paintings. In the 90’s I studied painting with the late Peter Lee, who taught me how to grid photos to transfer images to canvas. He was known for his cityscapes and is the subject of an indie documentary “Painting Bolinas”. My current mentor, Bay Area painter, Doug Schneider truly inspired me to use all the elements of abstraction, representation, and collage in building a narrative to my work.
So photography is where I start. Then I move into the studio and use grids, silkscreen and stencils to move my photographic images into my paintings.
The name of my project is American Bones. The idea for this project started with my series Amusement Architecture, portraits of Coney Island and the Santa Cruz boardwalk. I realized that amusement park rides are a shared American experience and the roller coaster is a great icon of this American pastime. My oversize laser cut stencils of roller coasters reminded me of a scaffold of bones. That was when I coined the term American Bones. Last summer, I had the opportunity to show the Amusement Architecture work in New Mexico. I packed up my 1983 Chevy Van, aka Foxy Brown, with my art, my dog and drove to New Mexico.
I fell in love with the southwest, discovering the ancient dwellings and petroglyphs of the Anasazi people. I stayed in a Hogan with a Navajo family, and talked with cowboys, farmers and artisans. I wanted to return to paint this area. I applied and was granted a two month residency at the Gallery, “Gathering Artists” in Corrales New Mexico for February and March, 2012. I again packed up Diesel and Foxy Brown and we arrived here on February 1st. Currently, I am working on the Southwest portion of my American Bones series with shows scheduled on March 16th at the Gallery Artists Gallery and April 5th at the Red Boot Gallery at the Range Café in Bernalillo, New Mexico. Please stop by if you are in the area.
So this is where you come in….I am looking to the Kickstarter community help me defray the gas costs for this road trip to expand my American Bones series. This will allow me to travel through the states for 5 months to photograph, interview and document my experiences.
The result will be a photographic library, as inspiration for paintings exploring our nation’s regionalism and distinct cultural roots. I am interested in what creates these distinctions and how they contribute to the common thread that is Americanism. I’m painting a new version of Americana. I am applying for another year long residency in 2013 to accomplish 48 paintings resulting from this road trip by 2014.
So where am I going? In mid April of 2012, I will embark on a five-month road trip from the Southwest through Texas, along the Gulf Coast down to Florida up the southern coast to the east coast. I will stay a for awhile in New England then head out to the Rust Belt, across the Midwest, returning to San Francisco by Sept 1st. I need your help to achieve this, Foxy Brown doesn’t get the best gas mileage and with the fluctuation in gas prices I will need the assistance. The more money I can raise the farther off the main road I can go.
Remember with kickstarter, if I don’t make my goal, I get nothing, so do share this video, and the concept of the project with your friends. It’s all about community participation and I need your help to make this trip happen.
So check out the gifts for your pledge. I think you will find something for every budget and taste. I am offering my large roller coaster stencils for those who want to participate with me by stenciling their own urban environments with my ready-made art. Super cool and your efforts will be documented on my blog. You can hang it in a window; spray it on your driveway; be an American. Also available are postcards, a poster, a signed original silkscreen of the roller coaster and a roller coaster souvenir cut from red acrylic, made by yours truly.
Thank you all for your support and please keep spreading the word on this project so that it can go forward.
