About this project
Hi. I am Shams-Tabraiz Muzaffar, and since I was a boy I have known that my father is cooler than you. He was the drummer for the first Pakistani rock band, in whose footsteps followed an army of rock & roll bands and a surrounding subculture in Karachi and other urban centers of Pakistan. The story of the Bugs and early rock music in Pakistan remains largely unknown and undocumented, with the few references to it in the public record erroneous and/or all too brief. Director Nicky Tavares and I want to tell you this story. Along the way we hope to humanize a dehumanized people, as well as explore complex issues of religious and hyphenated identities, transnationalism, memory and oral history. Through our unique personal stories we hope to challenge the discourse of fear that dominates Americans’ perceptions of Pakistan, Pakistanis, and Muslims in general. In doing so, our film will reflect the power of its subject, music, to transcend cultural and sociopolitical divides as it shows us our common humanity.
YOU CAN HELP MAKE THIS FILM POSSIBLE!
We began shooting Son of a Bug this past June in Texas and Canada. We are planning to begin shooting in Pakistan on January 12, 2012! We are seeking donations to make production in Pakistan possible. By contributing to this campaign you will play a critical role in bringing this unique and personal story to life.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS!
Our fiscal sponsor is The Center for Independent Documentary, a 501-c3 nonprofit.
ALL DONATIONS MADE THROUGH THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
WHAT WE NEED
Up until now we have squeaked by shooting and editing with borrowed equipment. We have managed to secure funding for air travel to Pakistan, visa fees, housing and the bulk of our camera equipment.
We need $6,000 to cover the remaining production expenses in Pakistan including:
- Production/equipment insurance
- Sound recordist/sound equipment
- Video stock/storage
- Air travel from Pakistan
- Transportation within Pakistan
WHAT IF WE RAISE MORE THAN $6,000?
$6,000 is the bare bones for production. Any funds raised beyond our goal will be put toward the following:
- Lighting
- Gaffer/grip rentals
- Off-line editor/editing suite
- Website design and maintenance
- Research materials
HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS - ALL OR NOTHING
We have set a goal to raise $6,000 by 6:30 PM (CST) January 2, 2012. If we do not reach our goal by this date, we receive nothing and risk delaying production in Pakistan.
Please help us reach our goal and tell this amazing story!
