HOTBOX is a psychological character study that explores the boundaries between film, theatre, and the mind, shot in stereoscopic 3D.
What is this?
HOTBOX is a psychological character study that explores the boundaries between film, theatre, and the mind. It consists of one actor preforming an on set monologue, captured in stereoscopic 3D. Though not filmed in one shot, it presents a seamless, real-time singular perspective. Through this static continuous perspective, the film may isolate the components of s3D and explore them as key aesthetic narrative tools. The film begins by scrutinizing the notion of s3D as emulated theatre space, yet depth perception shifts throughout the performance, inciting a more visceral emotive view into the mental state of the character. Due to in-shot interaxial and convergence shifts, a single-channel 2D version will not be extractable. Just as well, as it would be akin to showing a sound film on mute. This is new territory. Nothing like this has been seen before.
What is the film about?
Percival Haddock has done nothing wrong. Percival Haddock has only done what he had to do to set things straight. To quiet that little voice telling him to get even. What anyone would do under the circumstances. Behind all the science projects, ballistics, horticulture, substance abuse, Percival Haddock knows pain. And soon so will they. Troubles of the past have a tendency to linger in the mind…despite concerted efforts to eradicate them. After all, Brain Stew ain’t as easy as they’d have you believe.
What are you attempting to do with this film?
This film attempts to investigate the inner workings of adolescent mass murderers, inciting a psychological discourse around it. What could possibly account for such a profound annihilation of a youthful innocence? In understanding how a child becomes a monster, we may be better equipped to recognize the warning signs and find them the help they desperately need before it is too late.
