About this project

E3 Series for Improvisation Performance is a new event taking place once a month in the Lala Gallery in downtown Lafayette, Indiana. Our goal is to present dynamic performances around the central theme of Improvisation by a variety of artists from different genres, including dance, sound and spoken word.

The E3 Series will provide exciting programs for the Lafayette/West Lafayette public as well as a forum for the gathering and celebrating of live arts and ideas. There will be a new evening of performance every 2nd Friday of the month, starting in January, 2011. Open calls are going out now for artists to apply and participate in this community-building endeavor.

Your Support is needed to help this project succeed! Pledged support will go to vital areas of this proposal, including:
-The rental/acquisition of supplies necessary for transforming the gallery into a live performance space (sound equipment, seating, etc.)
-Supplies for adequately documenting, recording and archiving the performances and events
-Offsetting the cost of the performance space
-Support for the performing artists
-Spreading the word (advertising, promoting, web archiving and fostering the growth of the series)
-Bringing the improvisational arts to Downtown Lafayette!

The E3 Series was created through a collaboration by composer/musician Don Nichols, Lala Gallery owner and artist Angela Vinson, composer/musician Danny Weiss and choreographer/dancer Rebecca Bryant. The name "E3" represents the central themes of the series: Experiment, Exchange and Enjoy.

Experiment: for artists to use improvisation in their medium to take new risks and enrich their work

Exchange: for open dialogues between audiences and performers, and collaboration between artists of all disciplines

Enjoy: for the gathering and celebrating of live arts and ideas, and providing dynamic programs for the community.

“Improvisation is a performer’s most immediate and personal artistic expression, which results from years of experience and practice-- far from 'making it up as one goes along, or just doing whatever.' Improvisational arts transcend traditional genre labels, bringing together performing artists from music, dance, spoken word, and beyond.” --Don Nichols

Don Nichols is a percussionist, composer and improviser dedicated to innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. His musical palette draws from real-time electronic interfaces and a wide range of percussion instruments, which include traditional and non-traditional drum sets, resonant metals and gongs, found objects and hand percussion. Additionally, Dr. Nichols works in a variety of musical settings including contemporary Western music, jazz, chamber ensembles and non-idiomatic improvisation.

As a performer, Dr. Nichols works extensively both throughout the US and internationally. In 2000, he became the first percussionist awarded a Fulbright grant to Sweden, where he worked closely with percussionist Anders Åstrand. In 2007, he was one of ten artists in residence at the Guapamacatero Art and Ecology Residency in Maravatio, Mexico. Most recently, Dr. Nichols was selected to perform with Evan Parker’s improvisation collective during the 2010 Sonorities Festival in Belfast, N. Ireland. In addition, he has performed in Disney Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the Melbourne Festival, and the Agora Festival in Paris.

Following his collaborative mission, Dr. Nichols co-founded PMPD with choreographer Rebecca Bryant in 2002. PMPD combines movement, sound, technology and theater elements into a new brand of live art that challenges traditional notions of performance. A frequent collaborator with dance, Dr. Nichols has created and performed music for over 30 new dance works in the past three years.

Dr. Nichols earned his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of California, San Diego, where he worked with percussionist Steven Schick and played in the ensemble redfish bluefish. Prior to that, he received Master of Arts Degrees from both the University of California, San Diego and the Musikhögskolan in Piteå, Sweden. He also received a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance from Northwestern University. More info can be found at www.pmpd.org
