The Woo-Hoo Choo-Choo: An authentic ticket stub used at the infamous Michigan Central Station in Detroit. They vary in age from 1915-1940 and are to such exotic destinations as Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. Stamped on the back with the date and almost all of them say, "MCRR Depot Detroit." Guaranteed to be the real deal straight from the depot itself. Plus, you'll be holding the ticket that whisked some stranger away to a far off land 80-some years ago. Kinda creepy when you think about it.

Come On, Baby, Light My Kickstarter: An original matchbook from the Hotel Tuller, one of the buildings featured in the book. It's stamped inside Aug. 19, 1955. All of the matches have been removed, but it's still a neato Mid-Century Modern design of a classic Detroit hotel that closed in 1976 and was demolished in 1991. Hear that "Mad Men" fans? I said Mid-Century Mo.

The No-tell Hotel: A key fob from Room 584 at the Tuller Hotel. Sorry, no key, but you could always throw it on YOUR keychain and wow the Detroit-history-diggin' ladies. The fob is in excellent shape, though, and is stamped "TULLER HOTEL." The hotel closed in 1976 and was demolished in 1991. Maybe it was the key to the "honeymoon suite," if you catch my drift.

The Big Store Big Enchilada: Here's a hard-to-find collectible from Hudson's Big Store. In an era before Visa and plastic, customers at Hudson's downtown store could apply for lines of credit, and they were issued these little key fobs - the forerunner of a credit card. The front says, "Finder please return to the J.L. Hudson Co. Detroit." The back has the JLH monogram with the customer's "credit card number." The shopper would simply hand the cashier his or her keys and BAMMO! Economic stimulus. Note: Line of credit not included. We'll also include your name in the "Special Thanks" section of the book and throw in a vintage Hudson's postcard, so you could frame the two of them together if you'd like. Actually, that's not a bad idea. Why didn't I think of that? Got the book last week and it is so beautiful (omg, the pictures, yay!)! I'll be honest, reading it makes me rather disgusted at the people who played a part in letting the buildings be destroyed, simply because you don't see architecture like that anymore. To replicate it would be prohibitively expensive and so it's not likely we'll see those types of architecture again. I'm so glad I was a part of this project and I hope many, many people read it! =D Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I guess I'll just have to try to pimp this out more for you then. I bought your first book off of amazon to show a proof of work. Beautiful book. Sad to hear of the chopping of so many words though.
Creator Dan Austin on June 28, 2012
Well, right now, there won't be any excess money. I set out to raise HALF the costs needed for licensing rights. After Kickstarter and Amazon take their share, I'll still be short on what's needed to pay for said rights. I am, to no one's surprise, hoping to raise as much as possible.
So what to do with any of that money? It will go into running HistoricDetroit.org, mostly. As of right now, we're a nonprofit LLC and 100% ad-free. That means all the costs come out of my pocket. I've paid to have people do some tasks, such as scanning the vintage postcards, and such mind-numbing, repetitious work is not cheap.
If by some miracle we wind up with more money than we need for the book and the hosting costs, I will donate the money to PRESERVATION DETROIT (preservationdetroit.org), which works to save the city's history - and prevent the losses of buildings such as those in this book.

Just found out that my girlfriend's dad routinely picked her mother up from the Michigan Central Station, back when they were dating.
Creator Jonathan Kelley on June 28, 2012
So, any plans for the excess money? other than letting Amazon and Kickstarter skim their vig off the top?
