New Brooklyn Theater is a non profit theater company that is raising funds to buy the historic Slave Theater in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

We cannot properly express the gratitude we feel after seeing so many of you take immediate action on our behalf. Your generosity has moved us.
Over the past sixty days, 507 supporters have pledged $41,372 in support of New Brooklyn Theater’s campaign to buy and restore the historic theater at 1215 Fulton Street.
On November 5th, 2012, the building will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. We are thrilled to report that a Bed-Stuy resident has stepped forward today and pledged a substantial gift to help New Brooklyn Theater compete at auction. However, we cannot afford to lose the already-pledged $41,312.
Because we did not reach our goal, Kickstarter is NOT charging any of our backers. Therefore, we are asking you to make your donation by contributing directly through our Pay Pal account. Please go to www.newbrooklyntheater.com and re-pledge your donation immediately. Your tax-deductible contribution will allow us to begin producing quality work for our audience during the 3 years estimated to restore the theater and ensure that we will be victorious against any potential competitors at auction.
Help us see this campaign through by sharing this exciting news with your friends, family members, and colleagues. With a continually increasing number of backers, there is very little we cannot accomplish, but we need your support. We are looking forward to beginning a long-term relationship with Brooklyn audiences, and are already deep into working on our inaugural season.
If you follow through with your promise, we will follow through with ours.

New Brooklyn Theater is a 501(c) 3 theater company which is on a mission to purchase and restore the historic theater at 1215 Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, NY. New Brooklyn Theater plans to restore the building and turn it into a performing arts center with three stages that will develop the work of Brooklyn artists for Brooklyn audiences.
Our Kickstarter campaign is set at $200,000 which is the total needed for a down payment on the building. The space is an architecturally impressive and historically significant building that needs to be saved before the city of the New York forecloses and it is auctioned off to developers that will tear it down.
We estimate that the complete restoration and rehabilitation of the Slave as a multi-purpose performing arts center will cost between $3.5 and $5 million.
We are deliberately foregoing other more traditional development formulas that would require unnecessary and costly plans. Instead we turn to you to help spark Brooklyn interest in the restoration of this landmark space.
“We are raising the $200,000 down payment in this way because we are willing to put our vision up to a vote of public opinion,” says Artistic Director Solari. “When the Kickstarter campaign ends, if we are successful, we will approach our many potential corporate funders and development partners with something quite valuable, a mandate.”
For more information or questions please contact Sarah Wolff, Executive Producer by phone 914-523-0503 or email NBT@NewBrooklynTheater.com
*All donations are tax deductible. All contributors will receive your reward and information regarding the tax deductible amount for your tax purposes

The $200,000 goal is enough for a down payment of the original asking price that was discussed with the building's current owner. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, a line of credit has been established to ensure that NBT will be able to secure a mortgage, allowing artists and audiences to begin enjoying the theater as soon as possible.
New Brooklyn Theater's staff has already begun planning the next phase of fundraising. By pursuing grants, corporate sponsorships, and political discretionary funds, this theater will be a home for quality cultural programs for generations to come.
Your pledge to New Brooklyn Theater's Kickstarter campaign is the first step.
Instead of pursuing more traditional fundraising techniques, New Brooklyn Theater believes that Kickstarter allows for a more democratic discourse on the future of the theater at 1215 Fulton Street. Every backer this project receives, whether from Bed-Stuy or abroad, is a vote that says that the arts, education, and the preservation of history are worthy causes. New Brooklyn Theater believes in the people's right to choose what happens in their community and has faith that potential donors will see the value in a permanent communal home for the arts and education.
As per the rules of Kickstarter, if New Brooklyn Theater's goal is not met by October 5th 2012, then all pledges are refunded to the backers.
New Brooklyn Theater is a 501(c)3 incorporated with the sole purpose of restoring what is now 'The Slave Theater' at 1215 Fulton Street. In the unlikely event that NBT reaches the $200,000 goal but is unable to acquire the building the company will dissolve and the board of directors will find another charitable organization to transfer all assets to. The board of directors will be encouraged to choose a 501(c)3 that will specifically serve the youth of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
