We are building the combobulator... an interactive art installation that produces patterns and images based upon the movements and sounds of the person(s) in the zone of combobulation. Sensors track a person’s movements in 3D space and turns those motions into an avatar and projects them back on the screen. A microphone will feed audio into the combobulator which will affect aspects of the projection based on the strength and frequency of the sounds.

To really find out what it does... you have to dance and sing to the combobulator and it will burst forth with light and motion in return. The participant becomes the artist and can "paint" or interact with objects on the screen.

We need your help to make this project a reality. We're building a projection screen that we can tear down and move easily. In addition to purchasing the projector and generator, we're designing custom LED light fixtures for the trusses and the area of interaction. Weatherproof boxes will be constructed to protect the generator and projector. We also have to code all the different interactive environments that will make the combobulator reactive. Our tool set will be a mix of open source and commercially available hardware and software. We're designing custom circuit boards, purchasing infrared sensors, LEDs, a generator, a projector, trusses, fabric, wire, lumber and the list keeps growing.
