A multimedia anthology, showcasing the amazing writing, artwork, and spoken-word performance of the Necessary Poetry collective.
HOLY SPOKEN WORD
God searches for something important he’s misplaced -
“Truth… truth… where did I leave that piece of truth?”
Finds it in his coat pocket, goes to examine it,
accidentally drops it down to Earth.
“Dammit! I was saving that…”
You’re the best accidental slip of the truth
God ever failed to cover up.
Don’t compare yourself to the Good Book,
You two are chapters and pages apart…
Now, I’m not one much for the Bible,
But if you look at the scripture, it clearly states
(and I paraphrase),
“In the beginning, there was one poet,
And spoken word.”
I guess that makes what I’m trying to do a little bit more Divine
Me, an answer to all the times
you ever questioned your own worth,
And I’ll fortune tell you a future, free from failure
and self doubt…
I guess you’ll just have to take my holy spoken word for it…
My words are the spacecraft of my best crafted ideas,
And I’m sending them into your atmosphere,
So please, listen close:
There’s this beast of a rule of a law of a force called gravity,
Hand-in-hand with time, tag-teaming the weight of the world
on our limbs
And binding us to the gospel of the brush strokes of our lips,
Heavy with the dust of missed chances and regret,
Draws the curtains of the sky to a close…
Is the pressure of all the failed stars, that collapsed
like weakened lungs at the taste of everything
nobody ever managed to change in the world.
You’re just a bag of bones and blood, right?
A sad comic of just barely and not quite, right?
Tell me, what chance does one
question-mark shaped box of mistakes
Have against all that?
Use your ear drums to hear the here-and-now,
Drumming on your forehead,
trying to get your attention, saying
“Look at me! I was just a moment,
another tree falling in the forest.
infinite road map of blemishes and pretty scars,
I traced you back to that moment of beauty
When you spilled the sangria of your voice
All across the ballroom floor of the universe.”
Human, you are:
An envelope of sights and sounds
Wrapped around the finest piece of truth and love
The fire behind my eyes ever came into contact with.
You were born in defiance of those titans time and gravity,
Resetting the trip meter of your family name and
despite light years of space trying to keep you down.
This is how you came to be here,
So how could anything in this world keep you from doing
what you came here to do?
Is what keeps the sun coming back again every morning
“Just checking in to see when the real show’s gonna begin.”
And you’ve got a fan club
Strewn about the silent night sky,
Twinkling your name down in Morse code hopes.
Their underdog hero,
Stepping into the ring to take a swing
At everything you know you’ve got to change in this world.
Arms coiled in rebuff of Orion’s advances
As the stars try to write you off to a destiny
you can’t help but carve,
But check the Braille of stargazing,
And know that you will always be writing the sky
with your flawless
And I’m not one much for the bible,
But if you look at the scripture, it clearly states
(and I paraphrase)
“In the beginning, there was a poet…
And in the end,
there was you.”
(by Ryan Brown & Frank O'Brien)
Necessary Poetry is the collaborative effort of over 15 Arizona slam poets.
Sparked by a common love for written and spoken word, and a collective desire to inspire and motivate positive creative expression, we've joined together to publish a multi-media anthology of our best individual and cooperative creations - Holy Spoken Word. We are a passionate band of dedicated volunteers, and this stunning collection of words, artwork, and recorded performances is sure to seduce minds and ignite hearts everywhere.
BUT, POETRY IS BORING. Not this poetry! This poetry is raw. This poetry is relentless. This poetry captures smiles - it takes mouths hostage.
Want a sneak peek at our multi-media goodness? Click here to see Ryan Brown and Fran O'Brien perform the title piece, Holy Spoken Word at the Sedona Slam (September, 2009).
Your contributions will cover the cost of production and publication of our first anthology! Our goal of $5000 includes the creation of a fancy multi-media digital publication, as well as traditional first-run printing of a lovely, high-quality paperback book. Some of those books will be gifted to our local libraries, schools, and prisons, as part of our Poetry Outreach effort. Proceeds from the sale of remaining copies will be used to fund a series of community workshops on writing and spoken word. We hope to actually exceed our goal - in fact, every $300 collected beyond our target will cover the cost of one community workshop!
We believe that everyone has words of value to share with the world - that expression is essential, and that poetry is necessary. Please support us in our passionate pursuit, by contributing to this campaign, or by forwarding this information to your network.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Our risks and challenges are few. In fact, the entire anthology is written, designed, and ready to be sent to press. All we're waiting for is the funding to pay for it!
Any potential delays in printing will be communicated as soon as we are made aware. And of course, we'll do everything in our power to make sure we deliver the highest quality rewards to our backers, within the time-frame promised!
Words are our religion... so in a way, yes. But in the way you probably meant it - um, no.
The poetry submitted to Necessary Poetry may have religious themes or imagery from various traditions, but the project as a whole is secular and nonreligious. While some of the poets themselves may be religious or spiritual, others are secular, agnostic and atheist. The title "Holy Spoken Word" stems from the poets' belief that if anything is "holy," then surely it must be poetry and its power to connect peoples across time, languages, cultures, religious and spiritual or nonspiritual traditions.
Because everything is poetry. The way the rain falls, the way the light bounces off a glass, the way you cried hard when your first love dumped you because your freckles freaked him or her out... Inspiration can be found anywhere, and we're passionate about presenting ours in a way which connects us all on a human level.
What happens when you sell a gazillion copies of the book? Will you sit back to revel in your riches?
Hell, no! Necessary Poetry's contributors have all agreed that any monies received from the sale of this anthology will be used to fund a series of workshops on writing and expression, and to support the efforts of aspiring poets and spoken word performers in our community.
The hardworking poets hope to use those resources to fund workshops and efforts to bring poetry to a wider audience and encourage those who want to want to speak to find the poet and Holy Spoken Word within themselves, whatever that may be.
