Update #2: Almost Halfway There! + New Rewards

Posted on February 18, 2010

Hey Everyone!

With your help, the project is a few pledges away from making it to the halfway mark! I'm really excited to start mixing the album in March, and have a lot of great ideas to throw in the mix that will make for a HOT record.

The beginning of 2010 has brought many changes in my life. I have been searching for different opportunities within the musical world, and recently have decided to devote much more of my efforts to teaching music. I'm glad to announce that I will be teaching this summer at Own the Mic!, a music camp directed towards young vocalists, based in Marin County, CA. Check out www.ownthemic.org for more information.

After learning of this teaching opportunity, it gave me a great idea: why don't I offer my instructional services to my backers too? Check out the rewards section of my project, and you will see not one, but TWO new rewards!!

For $75, you will receive a 30 minute music lesson over Skype with me, and I will offer you either a voice, trumpet, piano, music theory or composition lesson, your choice. Plus 2 signed CD's and two concert ticket vouchers.

For $100, you will receive a 50 minute music lesson IN PERSON!, and I will offer you either a voice, trumpet, piano, music theory or composition lesson, your choice. Plus 2 signed CD's and two concert ticket vouchers.
This is for NYC folks to be redeemed at any time, since I live here. If you are in the Bay Area, we can set up a lesson during my two week residency with Rock the Mic (June 28th-July 9th)

*NOTE* to all you shy folks, this can be a lesson for yourself (private music lessons are enriching for all skill levels! No previous experience necessary!) OR if you really aren't interested, you may bequeath this opportunity to whoever you choose (mother, brother, daughter, boyfriend, etc.)

Once again, please retweet, repost, refacebook and spread the word! With your continued support, we can get this project funded and I can send you your rewards!

Thank you. With love and appreciation,
Natalie

p.s. If you are already a backer at the $75 level or higher and would like a music lesson, please comment on my project, and I will make sure you will receive a lesson on top of your previous rewards.

Update #1: Thanks! + Album Sneak Peak

Posted on February 15, 2010

Hello everyone!

For all that have pledged, I want to thank you sooo much for your support. The album is sounding incredible. Dominic and I recently went into the Gallery Recording Studio (with Brian Forbes as the engineer) and finished tracking all the voices and synths! The result: some hauntingly lush harmonies and gritty, rocking organ textures.

I'm just gonna give you a sneak peak of my rendition of Joni Mitchell's tune titled "the Hissing of Summer Lawns". I had the opportunity to work with mixing engineer Paul Cox, and he created a demo mix of this song only. So keep in mind, none of the other tracks are mixed! They will all need some loving attention before they can sound polished and balanced. That's where this project will come in: to fund the mixing and mastering studio time.

The project is slowly on its way to success, but it will need a major push in the next couple of weeks in order to meet the goal.

I need your help to make it there, or else I will not receive any of the pledges so far, nor will my current backers receive an album or any other prizes.

The cool thing is that all it takes to make the goal is a little help from a lot of people!
Just a reminder:
For $5, you get the single.
For $15, you get the album in digital format (of your choice! I will have tracks posted on Bandcamp.com and iTunes once the album's released)
For $25, you get a signed hardcopy CD!
....and there are more incentives should you choose to give more. Just check out the rewards on the main page.

If you haven't already, please donate what you can; as little as $5 will be accepted and eligible for a reward. If you have (my dear patrons, thank you!), please send this website link to whoever you think would like to help this project come to life.

All the best,
Natalie

p.s. stay tuned for a video update featuring the band in a couple of days!

24 year old Natalie John aspires to develop her artistic expression through original compositions and stretching the boundaries of pop music.

Natalie had always been enthralled with music, having been trained classically at a young age. At around age 16, she delved into the world of jazz records and found herself compelled to keep listening ever since.

Upon entering college at University of Southern California in Los Angeles, she studied with the best LA jazz musicians, earning the John Coltrane Foundation Scholarship in 2005, and the 2006 Downbeat Award for Best College Vocalist.

Transferring to New School University in 2006, John has studied with Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Junior Mance, Rachel Z, Joe Chambers and many other inspiring artists in New York City.

She participated in the prestigious Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead artist residency at the Kennedy Center in the spring of 2008. Also in 2008 she was selected from an international draw of musicians to participate in the Banff Centre’s 3-week International Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music, directed by world-reclaimed trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas.

Outside of collegiate groups, John has performed at clubs in and around the city of L.A., including Catalina’s, the Mint, the Lighthouse, Tangier, and others. The Natalie John Quartet was featured at the 2005 Festival Jazz en Lima, voyaging to Lima, Peru, South America, where she shared the bill with Maria Schneider, Ingrid Jensen, Geoff Keezer, and other international jazz greats

Since 2006, the Natalie John Quartet performs in Manhattan and Brooklyn at such venues as the 55 Bar, Zinc Bar, Sweet Rhythm, Spike Hill, Rose Live Music, Cachaca, and others.

Natalie recently shared her talents on Oscar-winning composer and incredible South Indian musician Prasanna's new jazz album (release info. TBA). She has also performed with Ingrid Jensen’s quintet, Rachel Z’s Department of Good and Evil, Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra, and DUET, formerly known as the Tyler Schwartz Group.
