open call for questions for a forthcoming video

Update #15 · Nov 25, 2012 · comment

hi, folks.

As of Monday, all of the backer rewards (except for the lathe-cut records), will have been shipped. It occurred to me that some folks might have questions about my work, where it's come from and where it's going. If I get a half-dozen questions or more, I'll post a video answering them.

I thought I'd also mention that I've noticed that To What Strange Place is currently available in its digital form for the amazingly low price of $12 (!) through Amazon, so if you know anyone who would like to buy the music but doesn't need the package or notes, they can get it that way now very cheaply: http://www.amazon.com/What-Strange-Place-Ottoman-American-1916-1929/dp/B00A8NJOXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1353829329&sr=8-3&keywords=to+what+strange+place

And the vinyl 3LP version, which was long delayed, as were many other releases, by the nationwide congestion at every pressing plant caused by the recent Beatles vinyl reissue campaign, is finally coming out this week. There are only 1,000 copies of each LP being pressed, and I haven't seen them in online stores yet, but my own copies just arrived, and they should be turning up in shops in a matter of days. There are fewer flaws than with the CD issue, but there is also less music on the vinyl release. But I hope it makes some people happy.

So. Send along any questions you might have, and once I've gotten six or so, I'll post a video answering any questions you might have, and I'll send along a link.

Thanks again for your supoort!

many bests!

Ian

shipping, part 2!

Update #14 · Jun 11, 2012 · 1 comment

hi, folks

Tomorrow morning another 85 packages of rewards will be shipped, which brings us very nearly up to date (or, at least not QUITE so behind.)

There was a snafu with Bed of Pain (the manufacturer shorted us on a hundred sleeves, and the pressing sold out faster than expected), so those LPs won't ship for another couple weeks. But folks who got CDs, thumb drives or What Remains of Eden LPs will see them arrive in the next 10 days.

Thanks so much for your patience.

In other Nagoski/music news:  There's a Kickstarter campaign for the work of one of my sisters, a conductor and frequent writer on choral music. It's an an attempt to disseminate her own new edition of beautiful set of Rachmaninoff pieces for women's choir. As she puts it: "Okay, I'll say it: there's a lot of crappy music for women's choirs. The 'Six Choruses' [in contrast] are musically accessible, singable, and beautiful. They have contrast and variety. They can be performed as a whole set or you can extract individual songs. The piano part is a real piano part! They're the perfect blend of loveliness and usefulness." http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1167314388/rachmaninoffs-six-choruses-for-everyone

take care,

shipping commenced!

Update #13 · May 18, 2012 · comment

Thanks to all of you kind backers for your patience! The funds for To What Strange Place finally enabled me to buy the shipping supplies and media to begin fulfillment of the rewards. The first batch of stuff to be mailed goes out in the morning. I hope to have the majority of the CDs, CDRS, LPs & thumb drives shipped in the next 10 days.

While you wait, a podcast/mixtape I was asked to make by the UK record label Fat Cat has been posted online. I tried to keep from overlapping much with releases I've finished, so about 2/3 of the 20 tracks here have never been reissued since the 78-era by me or anyone else for that matter. http://www.mixcloud.com/fatcatrecords/ian-nagoski-fatcat-records-podcast/

If you're dying for more great early 20th-century vernacular music, I can't recommend highly enough the Gramophoney Baloney radio show hosted in San Francisco by my buddy DJ McSchmormac. The most recent episode includes guest hosts Terry Zwigoff and Robert Crumb and, apart from being smothered in celebrity cred, is a great, great listen: http://podcasts.radiovalencia.fm/gramophoney_baloney/gramophoney_baloney.2012-05-06.1000.mp3

Last but not least, I must mention the current Kickstarter campaign by my dear friend Matt Bowden (who produced and directed the To What Strange Place doc/video). His labor-of-love project on the extraordinary Electrifying Crown Seekers, one of the few remaining gospel quartets in the South, a style that was HUGE in the 20s and 30s and has since been subsumed, for the worse, by other trends, has only 15 days left to go, but has not yet reached the 50% mark of funding. Having seen bits of his footage and heard about the story of the Crown Seekers, I can say it is a seriously wonderful film. I hope you'll join me in supporting it. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/byandby/by-and-by-new-orleans-gospel-at-the-crossroads

Things have changed in the past month for me. My wife and I recent moved just west of Asheville, NC, where I'm already finding a richer and fuller life, and where I'll be spending a lot of time at the airport later this year, thank to all of you.

Keep your eyes on your mailbox in a couple weeks.

take care,

Ian
