Touchstone is a device for performers and activists. Actors equipped with a TS transmit audio by touching objects in their environment.
Touchstone: Workshop at ISEA2011
Our goal is to create socially engaged work and performances and open up this prestigious community to a wider cross section of participants who wouldn’t normally have access or interact with ISEA.
Touchstone: the Tool
The platform we are building is a hack on a widely available inexpensive hardware. The workshops are geared to build a community versus a product. We want to see the Touchstone used as a platform for community building and empowerment versus a product. Our project is an advocacy of the open source, DIY, community art movements and the program will share valuable methods with anyone who wants it.
- the Touchstone is a mobile and tactical media broadcast platform worn on the hands of performers and activists which transform the hands of an agent into broadcast transmitters
- the technology of Touchstone is built upon audio exciter circuits embedded in gloves
Touchstone is a strategy for contesting the urban/performance landscape and community building rather than a product

Touchstone: in Istanbul
Our workshop will consist of demonstrations, discussions about strategies for use, and most importantly a hands on workshop to build Touchstone devices. The workshop is open to all levels of experience in electronics (beginners are very welcome). The workshop will conclude with a performance that is designed by the participants further supporting the fundamental philosophies of open source and DIY.
As long term adopters and advocates of these movements, we are open sourcing our hardware design, making it freely available and modifiable by users to keep the project low cost, open source/DIY, and inherently community based. In addition to these plans, we will also be producing video documentation of the project available online free of charge and a supplement to the community that wishes to work with or develop the Touchstone platform.
We are looking for support for the materials, tools, and a few expenses to present the workshops. The $2000 we want to raise on Kickstarter is a component of our overall fundraising strategy and it represents 22% of our overall budget of $9000.
It would be awesome to achieve 'over fund' this campaign so it can reimburse us for other expenses, but regardless of outcome of our fundraising we will be going to Istanbul to begin development of this community. We really appreciate your support. Thank you.

Our overall project budget is approximately $9000. This budget includes Travel, Materials, and Tools. We are working with our institutions to raise funding, however, we are interested in using Kickstarter to raise about 25% of the project budget. We believe that the philosophy and the community surrounding Kickstarter to be unique opportunity to build community participation.
ISEA is the leading international not-for-profit organization at the intersection of art, science and emerging technologies. Founded in 1990 in the Netherlands with an international focus, ISEA fosters interdisciplinary academic discourse and exchange amongst culturally diverse organizations and individuals working in these areas. The International Symposium for the Electronic Arts (ISEA) is one of the longest running conferences within the discipline and is held in a different culturally significant city each year. In 2011, ISEA will be held in Istanbul, Turkey in conjunction with the prestigious Istanbul Biennale.
The technology of Touchstone is built upon audio exciter circuits embedded in gloves which transform the hands of an agent into broadcast transmitters. Touchstone agents activate objects as a temporary/ad-hoc public address systems, by simply pressing their palms against it. Touchstone is a discrete technology platform: (1) it is virtually invisible on the garb of a performer/agent and (2) it is light and flexible; agents or performers can easily move (or escape). Moreover, it is a cinch to produce; the system does not require advanced electronics knowledge and is easily assembled from surplus, inexpensive, and/or widely available consumer technology.
Touchstone isn't a commercial project. Touchstone is an Open Source and community building project. If you aren't familiar with the Open Source movement this means that all of the plans and methods are available so you may build your own, develop it and even modify it for your situation. We welcome you to the community; please let us know if you build your own. We also welcome inquiries to come to you location or institution to lead demonstration workshops.
