Final Update - Thanks to all our fans
We wanted to thank everybody for their support & generous donations and also for the many contributors who've emailed us supporting our game.
Unfortunately we have not met our target but we have learnt a lot from doing our first Kickstarter campaign and we will use this exerience to evaluate the situation and decide what could be the best way forward for Nexus 2.
Thanks

Aaron, it would have helped if us backers wouldn't have had the feeling that this was a half-assed campaign that none of the developers gave any shit about. Really, if you look at the enormous success of Star Citizen, it quickly becomes clear what Chris Roberts did right and what Vincent van Diemen did wrong.
In short, I firmly believe that it was the lack of updates as well as the lack of ANY substantial information beyond walls of text that essentially described the gameplay of the first game. It would have been a great help if MWE had posted any concept art they worked on in those updates. Also, they could have posted links to interviews they gave to various sites.
Katar in the main commentary thread has it absolutely right when he says: "I have come to view projects like this, that exhibit such an utter lack of any effort to communicate with their funding community as not only amateurish, but disrespectful." Even with little work done on the game itself MWE could have run the game infinitely much better than they did.
While Nexus 1 is one of my most beloved games, I'm not sure if I will fund another go at making the sequel. MWE did not learn from the failed Gamesplant campaign, and they sure as hell don't seem to have learned from the mistakes in their KS campaign.

[turns on HK-47 voice]Recommendation: Check other projects. This failed because of Planetary Annihilation and Wasteland 2 drew enormous amounts of money from people's wallets. This left little to no money for this project. Recommendation: Say immediately that you would use not only Steam and not use DRM. DRM in this case equates to the big companies like EA and Ubisoft whom are despised due to their draconian DRM methods. Recommendation: Plan a flexible plan before kickstarting. This is vital. Recommendation: Have up-to-date engine prototype to show what you can do. Think something similar to tech demo you've released years previous.[/voice]

I do hope you guys give it another go again.
On the 20th, I sent you a PM with some suggestions for the next KS. I never got a reply, so I don't know if you were able to read them or not. Especially about promoting Nexus 1, so that new gamers will want Nexus 2 to happen.
Added to that, I think it would be important to better explain the reason for KS. Basically the things you said on the interviews (regarding money, IP, source code, etc). Do it in an update video so it doesn't offtopic the pitch video.
Creator David on October 29, 2012
I think it was a HUGE!!! OVERSIGHT!!! that I had to ask if the game was DRM Free and if I was going to be able to download the game from places other than steam when it's ready. I'll bet a large portion of people looked at your add then went over to the pledges and when they didn't see DRM-FREE they assumed you had DRM and moved on. Also nothing stated that you would be able to download the game from places other then steam when it's complete so they assumed the game would be on steam only. I know I did... The only reason I gave you a second look and decided to email you about the DRM and download locations was that I loved the first game so much.
Just my two cents,

Don't give up. I, among others, would really want to see this project become reality. I strongly believe that there are thousands out there that feel the same but didn't know about this project. Next time you need to let more people know that you are doing a Kickstarter. I didn't even know about it until last 6 days. You need to try to get popular gaming news sites and portals to let their readers know that you exist, there are too many games on Kickstarter right now to expect that your user base will find you by looking through the different Kickstarters. But you have probably realized this yourselves, and I'm probably not the only one that has suggested this. I really hope you are more successful next time!

i was hoping this would make it but as they say never surrender. try getting it out to as many places as possible the internet is infinite

Thank you Nexus team for attempting this. Nexus 2 will forever be on my "most anticipated" list. Never give up.

Carmageddon Reincarnation setup a deal with GOG that gave backers the original Carmagadden and Splat Pack to all backers at and above a specific tier.
Creator GoodKnight on October 28, 2012
HEY! Listen to me.. DO NOT give up.. Just don't give up we got this.. We NEED this..
Creator Claudio Puviani on October 28, 2012
As others have said, it's probably just a question that not enough people knew about it. The recent indie game craze has flooded the market with literally hundreds of announcements for Yet Another Retro Platformer, so it's more difficult to capture the critics' attention, even when you have something interesting. With a bit more fanfare leading up to it, I'm sure that Kickstarter could still be a viable model. Far less interesting projects get funded. Also, someone pointed out Steam's Greenlight. The two aren't mutually exclusive. You can generate the interest on Greenlight and fund the development on Kickstarter.
Creator Stanislav on October 28, 2012
You can also try Steem Greenlight from Valve. I think there you will win.
Creator ScareYa on October 28, 2012
I am sorry the campaign failed, obviously 3858 backers are just not enough to make it happen. The lack of interest regarding space sims in general can't be the problem, just observe the extremely successful kickstarter campaign of Star Citizen. Should you try it again someday - which I sincerely hope - Nexus 2 needs a lot more attention on the media.
Creator Stefan Krasimirov Keranov on October 28, 2012
It might be more successful if you add the first game to the bundle ?
Creator Gino Bales on October 28, 2012
LydonB speaks the truth.
Creator Christopher Parker on October 28, 2012
A shame - I'd really hoped this'd work out. I think the biggest problem was that hardly anyone knew this kickstarter existed. A video with TotalBiscuit helped, but with only a week to go, it was too late. Really, you need to be talking to people who can get word out on youtube and the like before the kickstarter even starts, so that way you have momentum. Still, best of luck with whatever you try to do next.
Creator LydonB on October 28, 2012
You need much more marketing; this is one of the major reasons of why the kickstarter failed. You practically had no coverage of the game on review sites.
Also, a technology demo dating years back and concept art aren't sufficient. You need to gamble and produce a proper video.
The best way forward for the game is kickstarter, we don't want an unpolished, rushed game released by a publisher.
Creator Roland on October 28, 2012
Sorry this wasn't successful.
Since Nexus 1 wasn't that well known, the next kickstarter campaign should include dev commentary and some gameplay videos of the old game, point out the strengths and weaknesses and how you would do it in Nexus 2.
Creator Dan Parsonson on October 28, 2012
Sorry to hear this didn't pan out for you - hope you'll get the chance to try again or fund the game some other way!
Creator Inquisitioner on October 28, 2012
Please don't listen those who want an iOS/Android, that will severely limit the game.
Creator Benjamin on October 28, 2012
I am really sad this didn't work out. I think the kickstart would have required a bunch more of publicity and media attention.
I do hope you go through with your plans for Nexus 2 somehow - if through a kickstarter again, I'd be happy to support it again.
Creator Yousaf Khan on October 28, 2012
I would love another kickstarter where you port the original Nexus to the iOS\Android platform. That will get you a fresh set of pro. reviews and a larger fanbase.
Creator Scorn on October 28, 2012
It's too bad that the Kickstarter didn't work out, and i still hope that you're somehow able to realize Nexus 2!
Creator Niclas on October 28, 2012
I think you need to try to appeal the pc gaming population more, top end graphics. Promise its pc only and such. Try to make more vids on youtube and such to promote it.
Creator yale3d on October 28, 2012
I'm sad, but i hope you guys don't give up!
Best of luck!
Creator Chris Servicky on October 28, 2012
I will back you guys through the other methods you try.
Creator Chris Earl on October 28, 2012
I hope you find a way forward, Nexus was one of the best PC games ever made, it deserves a sequel
Creator M. Stumpf on October 28, 2012
I really hope too you will find a way to proceed.
And i hope further you've learned something valuable here!
Communication with us all is essential! That is what i've been missing.
Interviews and Links are great, but interact with the Kickstarter Backers, interact with your Fans and use that. Ask for opinions on the Game or let people decide some stuff, even Small stuff like Name for a Ship in the Game.
Use social Media, this Project was not even mentioned on Twitter or other channels...
For me, i want to see that a Project that i backed, is a living thing. Interactions between Creators and Backers. Questions asked and answered and so on. If Backers get to decide stuff, even better...
And that is here clearly lacking.... and it is a reason that this failed...
Please note: A Reason, not THE Reason...
I am sorry if it sounds that i would know better. I am assuring you i don't. I just can give you my oppinion and what i've missed here. I hope that will help you Guys to do better in the future.
I wish you the Best!
Creator KarlEmil Norberg on October 28, 2012
I really hope you will find a way to proceed with the project. Nexus 1 was awesome and we need more strategy titles in this world nowadays, especially ones in space.
