A dark comedy that revolves around a dysfunctional family saga leading up to a potential homicide.
"Upstairs" is a short dark comedy that takes place in the master bedroom while a dogs funeral proceeds downstairs. Patrick and Andrew enter the master bedroom to escape the event ensuing below in order to smoke weed. When a cheating couple enter the bedroom Patrick and Andrew quickly hide in the bathroom in order to conceal the fact they were smoking. The cheating couple are suddenly interrupted by a third party entering the master bedroom, forcing them to grab their clothes and hide in the closet. The third group of people to enter the bedroom is Piper and her mother, Katherine. Through the keyhole in the bathroom door, Patrick and Andrew watch the two women's argument escalate. When Piper threatens to shoot her own mother in a desperate attempt to get her attention, the two boys and the cheating couple are forced out of hiding and bring their own dirty laundry to this explosive and hilarious climactic moment. At the core, this story is about a young woman that finally stands up for herself and learns to speak with her own voice.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:
We will use the money given to us for the following:
- CAST (the actors will be dedicating their time to rehearsals and a two day shoot)
- LOCATION (the master bedroom location is an important character in the film as well!)
- EQUIPMENT (in order to capture the right tone and feel for this dark comedy we would like to employ the use of a RED camera and a steadicam)
- FOOD (we would love to feed everyone that will be working so very hard to make this film come to life!)
MONTANA MANN Writer/Director
I was born with a camera in one hand and a pen in the other. Telling stories has been my passion since before I can remember. My first short film Dangerously Close received recognition at many festivals including: Hollyshorts, La Femme Film Festival, and Vegas Indie Film Fest. My scope is diverse, not only covering narrative shorts but I also direct commercials. Take a look at these screen shots from some of my previous work:
BARBARA STEPHAN Producer
Originally from Brazil, I came to the United States with a BA in Social Communication in my luggage, and a strong desire of making movies in my heart. It was a long way until I got to Los Angeles, and along this way I learned that keeping a positive energy, working hard and learning from your experiences will get you anywhere you want. Since 2009 I worked on two Features Films and a few Short Movies, TV Pilots and Commercials... and I know that this is just the beginning!
MIKE REYES Cinematographer
My interest and fascination in Film and Cinematography started at a very early age. Even now, I still find that my curiosity of the trade resonates very strongly. I began pursuing Cinematography in 2010 after enrolling at Art Center College of Design. Since then, I have shot numerous narrative films, music videos, and commercials. I am constantly striving to sharpen my skills and train my eye in the art of Cinematography and Filmmaking.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are numerous risks and challenges when making any film - maybe that is why we enjoy doing it so much - but either way we want you to know that no matter what risks or challenges may arise during the production of this film after it is successfully funded we intend to complete our project no matter what! Risks can arise anywhere from our location deciding they do not want our crew there anymore to actors getting sick...but if any of these things happen we will face them with onwards and upwards faces and find a location from our backup list and/or push back the shoot a week until the actor has sufficiently dosed up on enough vitamin C to last a lifetime. Creating a film and putting the right team together is like conducting an orchestra; everyone has to be in tune to play a masterpiece. The biggest challenge is making sure that every single person we put on our team plays the same tune as us!
