Hi, Molly, I supported your project because I believe you are very talented, but I have to let you know that I'm very dissapointed. I understand the conditions of the project, but the original piece I received have some lines that don't resemble the beauty of your drawings. At least I have your signature... kind of expensive for an autograph...

Is there a site where photos of the entire set of drawn walls can be seen? I'd like to see if I can figure out where the squiggles on my 4x6 came from. Give it some context.

I think I might have a partial cloud and a partial bicycle wheel.

Kim Boekbinder on October 11, 2011

Dear Nick, I'm sorry you were disappointed. First off, while 745 backers may not seem like much, it's actually an insane, multi-week process to cut, sign, pack, label and ship that much art. Its one of those things that I don't know if its possible to comprehend until you try.

Secondly, I did 270 feet of art in 5 days. While I tried my best to be detailed, as you can see from the many photos of the room, there's no way it would be possible, in the time and space allotted, to do 369 fully realized, stand-alone 4" x 6" drawings that also made sense as part of a larger mural. We tried our best to give good, interesting cuts, but not everyone who backed can have a drawing of Stoya. My drawings have central focuses, and they also have swathes of background with grass, clouds and mountains, that, when you cut them up, do break down to lines. Also keep in mind that each sheet of the many sheets of Canson paper we covered the room with was 24" x 84", and when you cut that up into 4" x 6", it can become rather abstract

To try and sweeten the deal, I paid for custom, gold inked envelopes for all the $20 backers, so the package would be a neat little object.

To give you a basis of comparison, when I do a pen and ink for a client that's 8.5 x 11, it takes me around 6 hours and I charge around $500-$900.

I'm truly sorry you're not happy with owning what you do, which was a piece of a project that was a dream of mine and that I'm immensely proud of. Thank you so much for being part of making it happen.

I was really excited by this project, and from the video and images of the walls, it looks like it all went really well. Then, I got my 4x6" original cut from the wall. I know that I didn't get to choose from a group or anything, but I figured there would be some thought that went into where these pieces were cut from. I've got what looks to be half of a large flower and my friend got what looks like a few lines and some white space.

Was any thought put into cutting these pieces? With only 745 backers this can't have been THAT insane of a process. Your art is amazing, but what I received in the mail doesn't come anywhere close to reflecting that. One would have expected some care in making sure that all sizes of art reflected some sense of the artists vision.

I realize that I only spent $20 and I'm happy to have contributed to the project, but what I received in return isn't anything like what I expected.

Agree with @Dale Reed. The point was art for art's sake, not live streaming. I'm glad to have helped in the little way I could and I hope you can take on another project like this someday. I'll be there to throw more money your way.

    15. Missing_thumb
Dale Reed on September 9, 2011

@Rodrigo Pontremoli I think most of us were more interested in the art, though I get your point that it would have been an interesting experiment for us all to be more immersed with it, and it would have been cool to have had the live stream on more (especially for those of us in other countries), that wasn't I don't think the intention of the project really. Molly did what she set out to do which is spend a week (well, 5 days but let's not quibble!) in a room and fill the walls with art. The live stream was very much a sideline to allow us a peek into that for me. My main issue with the live feed was that it was limited to 50 people, so given there were 745 backers that seemed a bit unfair. I know I failed to see any of it because the max had been reached whenever I went onto the site. However I'm not going to moan because what I came here for was a piece of the art and a piece of the whole experience. We'll still get the documentary too. I'm sure Molly might take your comments on board for when she does a month of hell next year! ;)

Rodrigo Pontremoli on September 6, 2011

      Hi Molly.
I guess I did not explain myself correctly. I said that I understood this was not a 24/7 stream. Never would have asked for it. But going from 24 hours to only 3 is a huge leap.
I don't know why, but it looked to me as if you were planning to make us (all your backers) be part of the experience in a truly immersive way. This is: streaming a lot of hours a day. Watching you and being part of it in the good times and the bad times. Three hours just seems too controlled. I don't believe you're really out of your comfort zone like this.
I would hate it if I had hundreds of people watching me work for hours and hours, commenting, criticizing, giving support and what not. But probably from this situations, great things could come up. I thought you were going to put yourself in that situation.
I thought it was amazingly brave and crazy to do that.
I love your work and I think you're a good artist, so I'm happy to be a backer. But again, I was expecting a much more complex experiment would come out of this.

Molly Crabapple on September 5, 2011

Rodrigo, the Kickstarter always said we wouldn't be streaming 24/7 (its right in the description). Why did you contribute if this bothered you?

    30. Rpontremoli.thumb
Rodrigo Pontremoli on September 5, 2011

      I most say I'm a bit disappointed.
One thing is not streaming 24/7, which I understand. Another completely different thing is to just stream 3 hours a day. What was a big thing: Feeding our voyeuristic instincts and a beautiful social and artistic experiment. Became a very short time to chat with the artist while we see her work. Pretty much what the French had created long time ago on the streets of a well known parisian quartier. To bad.
Anyway, I love Molly's artwork but the idea was not buying the art or funding a semi-closed experiment. The idea was to truly be part of the experience.
