I anticipate that there will be a slew of unexpected events &
information that will dictate the direction of this project as I
continue to research. It's no big surprise with Rio's winning bid for
the 2016 olympics, that change may come faster than expected. I had
always kept my fingers crossed for Rio and the 2016 summer olympics -
it could bring about a beautiful change to a beautiful city - but it
could also bring about a negative change too. Unfortunately, just
recently, there has been a violent outburst in one of Rio's favelas, Morro dos Macacos. This is sad, but it is also a
reality for the cariocas (the people of Rio) - this is nothing new,
but it's coming to light as the spotlight is now shinning on them.
Rio is a dangerous city. But there is something strangely beautiful
in the way the people of the favelas live right next door to the
wealthy that live on the beach. I've always said that those in the
favelas have the best land in all of Rio - on the hillsides
overlooking the marvelous city. But, what I do not want to stress is
the fairy tale side of it all - the city currently functions because
of the fact that these two entities are separate. I question how the
olympics with help or hurt those in the favelas - they too are people
who need a home. And everyone deserves to feel safe in the place they
call home, no matter how much or little money one makes. We are all
in this world together.
There is only so much I can experience here in Chicago,
before going there to document in Brasil. Recently, a Brasillian
friend's mother contacted me to help me better understand the MST.
While in practice, what they do sounds like a great benefit to the
community, unfortunately, in instances, violence is often used.
Recently, in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, a large orange
farm was allegedly destroyed by the MST.
This is a reminder that as the constant flux of new information comes
my way, there is a constant change to any preconceived notions I may
have envisioned for this project. I have no clue what images I will
create before I get there, other than holding to a few technical
standards that have run throughout the last two series of
"insideout." My preconceptions & ideas are crumbled every time I read
current news. This is the unknown journey I am on...
